microSD card capacity support

The SanDisk Sansa  e200R Rhapsody has a microSD card slot to increase storage. I see the cards listed in 1, 2, and 4 GB sizes. There are also microSDHD cards up to at least 32GB; I suspect they do not work in this player.

The player's manual offers no clues about acceptable capacity. I don't know what existed when the player was made. Does anyone have any information or experience? Will the 4GB microSD cards work properly?

The E2x0R (like the other first generation E2x0 series players) supports microSD, not microSDHD when using the Sandisk firmware.  Rockbox supports SDHD, as it is purely a software feature Sansa chose not to implement in their earlier players.

There were (at least) two types of 4GB SD cards IIRC, both of them non-compliant with the SD standard.  I am unaware if either type works on the Sansas.  That said I believe you'd need to find new old stock as I've seen nothing but SDHC 4GB cards for a long time now.
Creature of habit.

according to this, it only accepts 2GB with the original firmware as that is the maximum standard for microSD cards. but with rockbox, you can use microsSDHC which means up to 32GB of goodness.

I don't know if I could actually buy them but I see the ads for 4GB microSD cards, as well as for SDHD, on Amazon. Do I read your post correctly to say 4GB microSD cards work differently from lower capacity microSD cards?

This player (obtained used) has Rockbox on it but it does not work. I presume it could be uninstalled and reinstalled? The original OS seems to be perfectly fine, and very easy to use, for the intended purpose of audiobooks. Most likely nothing else will ever be put onto the player.

Is Rockbox likely to offer any improvement for this purpose? Will it be as simple and clean to use as the native system? I know from experience that my daughter will just refuse to deal with it if there is a hassle involved in getting to what she wants.

4GB cards are supposed to be SDHC.  4GB cards using the older SD protocol are theoretically possible, but nonstandard.  I have no idea how easy they are to find or how compatible they are.

Regarding rockbox, its a completely different operating system with nothing in common to the Sandisk operating system.  As for improvements, there is an SDHC driver, which would seem to be the most relevant difference here.

She has started buying Audible books for a Sansa player, but loaded nothing onto the player yet. If I remove, then reinstall, Rockbox on the player, will the Audible material still work with it?

One has to make a choice when installing the Audible control program, about what kind of player one wants to load the books onto. They told her her first choice of player is not supported, so she could not buy books to use on it. So, will the Sansa e200R still be a Sansa to Audible if I put Rockbox on it? The only purpose of using Rockbox is to support microSDHD cards.

I have no idea.  Since you already had rockbox installed on the player, you could try playing an Audible file and see if it works in the original firmware.

DRMed files are not going to work in a replacement firmware. Only the sandisk software will be authorized to play them.  You can probably reboot into the Sandisk software and play them from there, but obviously not from SDHC cards since theres no driver for those in that firmware.
