CD player spins up on every track

When I play a CD on foobar, as the music starts at the beginning of every track, the CD player spins up (producing loud  noise) for some 20-30 seconds, then spins down.  What is the reason for that and can it be avoided? Is the track first copied in a buffer and then played from it? Needless to say, you don't want your CD player to overpower Beethoven at the beginning of every track. I guess it's a matter of settings, but I haven't figured out which.
