i have super hearing...

Using foobar2k's test tones I was amazed that i can hear the really high tones.  I mean i have been to quite a few rock/metal concerts and figured my ears would be too damaged to hear these.  The weird thing was is that some of them sounded alot different.  Some of them pulsed, some of them were constant, some of the higher tones sounded lower.

This all led me to believe that there is no way i'm hearing all these and that something is wrong on either a hardware or software level.  Would anybody like to fill me in on what I could be doing wrong? or do i have super hearing.

It's probably hardware.
If I recall correctly, my speakers cannot play above 19 kHz, though I don't know if this is a limitation of my Audigy or my Inspire 5.1. What I do know is that I don't have audiophile quality stuff. Headphones like Sennheiser's are the way to go, when you're doing test tones.

1) List your soundcard/FB2k output method. You might have a 'everything goes to 48khz' AC97 card that wrecks everything in HF output - should I believe my onboard sound I can hear up to 24khz  . Not with my M-Audio Delta 410 card - up to 19khz...

2) Test tones can be a nice way to burn your tweeters so be careful  Happened to me once - ok, just the fuses so I got away with just replacing that on my speakers (not all speakers have fuses, so...)

3) Best thing to do to test this would be to go to a 'ear doctor' (translate in english please, here it's called ORL) and have your hearing tested with proper equipment (audiogram).

4) Hearing test tones at a certain frequency and being able to ABX lowpassed music are two different things.

@sld: the quote AFAIK is 'with a grain of salt'... might be wrong though

Most soundcards, including the Audigy 2, distord very high frequencies and turn them into lower, audible frequencies.
I can't remember, though if this also happens with 48 kHz waves. Can anyone test, please ?

thanks for the replies guys.  I figured something was wrong.

16khz sound like it was real and so did possibly 17.  but 19000 and above (possible some 18000 tones) just sounded too loud.  So it's probably my audigy distorting the sounds .  That really sucked because i wanted to see if I could hear the difference in music that had different lowpasses.  I guess the true measure would probably be a hearing test.  Thanks anyway for the clarifications though

Pio, does that hold true for the Echo Indigo for laptops? I'm getting that soon along with the Sennheiser 497s(opposed to normal laptop sound and generic sony $20 headphones) so I can have something for listening at home? I don't have anything but a laptop and soon an iRiver IMP 550 for music listening

I don't know.

Windoze9x, you can perfectly run your test burning the frequencies on a CD, and listening with good headphones and a hifi player. There is no such problems with hifi CD Players.

I don't think so, that card looks pretty good.
