Try updating your sound card drivers.

It is definitely not because of the file system.

Is it just wave files, or any encoded files as well?

..get SCSI (well, maybe...)

And it's not all that rare BTW.

* check whether your FAT32 drive your ripping from is on the same channel as your CD-ROM (probably is); Change that, IDE can't interleave reading/writing so you get chaos.  If they need to share a channel then the hard drive should be master (as long as this doesn't cause ripping to skip, which it will if you tax your master drive on which the cd-rom is slave overly)

*check whether bus-mastering is enabled; unforntunately the newest VIA drivers won't tell you...  But if you didn't update your chipset-drivers you'll need to activate is (control panel, system, device manager, ide-channel)

*Sounds stupid but...  Make sure your fat32 drive is securely mounted, loosely mounted drives vibrate more, and thus slow down, and if your unluckly and they start resonating the speed 'll REALLY plummet.

Though this would cause consistent skipping:  Additionally, loosely mounted drives don't loose heat through the mega heat-sink your case is, meaning that the temperature may vary more, causing more auto-calibrations (drive head re-alignments to take into account thermal expansion/contraction).  Every calibration takes some time.

Hopes that helped...

This is really unlikely, but if your drive is HORRIBLY fragmented (defrag display looks like white-noise) you might, could be, possibly, don't take my word for this, get alot of speed degradation...

Hi Guys

All wav files is in non active partition (Fat32)

Reformated the active partition (NTFS)
Installed Win Me to active partition (now Fat32)
The wav files sound ok now

Joh33 - i only use wav files
emn12 - drive is definetly securely mounted

Going to try to reinstall win2000 again
but this time format to NTFS
Previously i install to FAT32 then only convert to NTFS

Thanks for the tips
