Playing from line-in in Foobar? Please help!

Hi,
hoping someone can help me out there, I have been hunting round for a long time to with no success as to how I can use Foobar to play and control my line-in audio and use such plugins as channel mixer to upmix my stereo source (my sky tv box) to surround sound like Foobar does with my music. My research has told me that it may of been possible with a plugin call Foo_recorder.dll and older versions of Foobar but I have been unable to find this plugin and so cannot test this out. All I want to do is be able to listen to the stereo audio of my line-in and use foobar to upmix it with channel mixer! Please can someone help and hopefully provide some information and links?

Many thanks!

I'd like to second this request, but please keep in mind that there may be substantial technical hurdles to be overcome here. For one thing, you almost certainly would not be able to record from one device and play on another, unless some dev is insane enough to implement an ASRC of high enough quality... And you'd probably be limited to MME and DirectSound I/O only, because I think ASIO and KS require simultaneous opening of inputs and outputs.

Hi thanks for joining in on this, it would be great if you could select the input source (line-in) and hear the audio from there and apply such plugins as channel mixer to upmix that stereo audio. I've heard of other people wanting to record audio from their line-in but I would simply want to listen to it. My aim is to upmix the audio that comes from my Sky tv satellite receiver using the cable connecting it to my pc-line in and from there upmix it. The closest I have come in accomplishing this was when using SRS audio sandbox which does upmix 'live' audio from line-in however I found it to crash after usage (as other people have). Also with that it essentially creates a new audio device in which you have to select in Audio Devices within windows. If it is possible with Foobar it would be great as the channel mixer plugin distributes stereo sound amongst my 5.1 surround sound system perfectly when playing music and so would love if the same could be done with line-in input!

Hi thought I'd post this in the 3rd party plugins section as hopefully theres a plugin to achieve the following,

When I use SoundForge to record the input signal I only get a mono sound record although I can hear it stereo through my speakers.
If foobar2000 have a recorder plugin of what you listen (if this is possible) I want it too.

You may have luck searching through archive.org, but note that it's highly disrecommended to use foobar 0.8 and it's components - That's why you won't find any of them anymore here. Instead you should try to request a developer to make such component for 0.9.
Can't wait for a HD-AAC encoder :P

I'm almost sure that would be a config-issue.

well the furthest I've got is using foobar 0.8 along with the foo_record.dll and I am able to listen to my line-in input with foobar. The problem is that the channel mixer plugin I use with the latest release of foobar is not compatible with this earlier release and so although I can listen to the output, I have no decent means of upmixing the source with foobar 0.8!

Ive got a step closer in achieving my goal however not with Foobar this time. Ive discovered Graphedit and have it set up so my line-ine goes through a filter which then upmixes and outputs to my speakers. Only problem so far is that the Aud-X audio decoder that I use produces a delay as it must not be able to handle live content so well. Anyone know of a good stereo to 5.1 upmixing encoder that I can use in this way? Cheers!

may seem dumb of me but how do i select my line in as my input? and from there what encoder etc do you suggest?

A round about fix would be to use the edcast component for foobar2k. It allows for input from any line in which, if I remember correctly, is then routed to foobar2k for monitoring.

how do I do that? Ive downloaded the component for foobar however cant seem to find any options to configure it within? I got the standalone player of edcast also but can't hear my line-in even though its selected and is inputting in to my pc? thanks!

Here is some guide for up-mixing with Bidule and here for GraphEdit (you may want to try GraphStudio instead)
Play a little with both, because you can't get it to work right on first try

Hi thanks for the info, just at work right now so will give those a try later tonight. The problem I face is not so much the task of upmixing (as I really like the simplicity of Graphedit and the interface and features of AC3 filter) however it is dealing with the delay of the audio. As I cannot delay the video (as it comes from my Sky Satelite receiver) and so its the case that the audio is delayed because of the processing and upmixing, therefore I need a way of upmixing the live line-in source with absolutely no delay. Is this possible?

Well, yeah those guides are for "off-line" procesing. I don't know if it's possible as I haven't tried that, but check on Bidule
If you have problem with signal from your card input, Bidule is also VST capable i.e., so insert it in some Host application and run it in VST rack, can be quick workaround

EDIT: are you using this AC3 filter in GraphEdit? In any case try another filter, i.e. ffmpeg's ac3enc

that sounds good yeah,  I'm new to all of this though so any chance you could please give a overview of exactly what I would need (as in software, drivers etc) and how to use them like step by step? Would be greatly appreciated i've spent many hours trying to sort this!

Thanks

Here is example screenshot of Bidule run in Cantabile Host which listens to sound card input (playing file in foobar i.e.) and runs other VST effect from Bidule (Voxengo Elephant). You can set input to sound card input in Windows recording mixer

PDF help file which comes with Cantabile can help you about settings but I doubt that there is anything special to set. Maybe selecting ASIO?

ok thanks for that, I gave it a try but still could not achieve the same audio results as did with graphedit and the ac3filter. I just wish I could sort out this delay problem! I really don't understand it, I'm running intel dual core 3.4ghz each and so surely I have the processing power to handle on-the-fly upmixing without a 2 second delay in my audio?!

try ffmpeg filter and GraphStudio, or just some other filter

I tried various ffmpeg filters but still have this annoying delay, can you suggest any specific filters which are able to upmix without delay? This is well and truly puzzling me as surely my computer can handle the live upmix, I mean SRS Audio Sandbox did the job perfectly however crashes with my Realtek drivers! This graphedit with AC3 filter would be perfect, if only it didn't have the audio delay!

Stereo Mix (I think I have latest Realtek drivers) has 500 ms latency, I don't know about Line-in because I don't use it, but as this may be the problem try above VST approach with ASIO4ALL driver instead DX
I don't have other ideas, maybe you should post new thread in HA general audio forum

I just noticed that Realtek has updated their generic HD driver 10 days ago
Sandbox (1.9) is running fine through it for me
