how do I change volume in foobar2k?

Hi guys,

I'm new to this and I searched a for several mins on this forum before I registered but couldn't find or didn't understand what the people were talking about. So I thought I'll register and ask around since foobar2k is new fav audio transcoder.

I have an audio file that has low volume and I want to convert it to a higher.

Is anyone of these what I'm looking for?

foo_dsp_vst
foo_dsp_vlevel
replaygain (can't remember the exact name)

I just downloaded foo_dsp_delta, thinking it'll keep the great sound while up converting the volume level of the audio.

Thank you,
MKVCrazy

I suggest using replaygain. Add the song to a playlist, right click on it, choose "ReplayGain" from the popup menu, and then "Scan Per-File Track Gain". When the scanning is complete you can apply the peak volume information to the file tag instead of modifying the actual music data. This way foobar and other players can automatically adjust the volume for the track during playback.

You can tweak the replaygain playback levels from:
File> Preferences> Playback> ReplayGain> Preamp

If you want to permanently modify the data of your sound file to adjust the volume: right click on the file in the playlist then choose "ReplayGain" from the popup menu and then "Apply Track ReplayGain to MP3 file" from the submenu. Note that this action cannot be undone so I recommend the first solution.

Yeah, but you should apply ReplayGain to all of your music files, not only one. Otherwise it will change the volume on one song, but that doesn't necessarily mean the difference to other songs will become less.

Nope. I would only apply RG for files which have positive dB values so I don't have to crank volume up too much. Since most of today's music is very hot mastered, it's better to NOT apply RG.

Because: if you do apply RG to a file which has, say, -9.15 dB (very low dynamic range!!) and you FORGET to apply RG to another file which follows directly in your playlist, it will blow apart your speakers and/or your ears once the next file starts playing.

Which is why I set preamp for files without RG to -12.0 dB in Preferences > Playback.
Full-quoting makes you scroll past the same junk over and over.
