EAC Ripping Audio CD-RW disc, Sync Errors and Suspicious position 0:00

Hi everyone

I use EAC for ripping my CDs to WAV.

Then I use either RazorLame of FLAC Frontend to convert large batches of WAV files to either MP3 or FLAC as required.

Recently though I've been recording records from vinyl, onto my Sony RCD-W3 CD recorder deck.
Then ripping the CD to the WAV files.

But I'm getting strange errors and I'm not sure if this means there's a problem with my rips.

When EAC was ripping the CD I noticed there was a Sync Error coming up for each track - apart from on the 1st track.
On looking at the log file...

There were errors

End of status report

So for each of the tracks, apart from the 1st one, I get Copy finished rather than the usual Copy OK.
That means there's a problem with the rip.

But looking at the log I noticed the errors were all "Suspicious position 0:00:00" for each of the tracks.
There are no other errors reported.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening?
I'm thinking it's just something strange about the way my Sony CD recorder deck finalises the CD, or how it writes the start of the tracks.

The WAV files sound fine, and there's no audible signs of rip problems throughout the tracks or at the start.

But the fact there are no other suspicious positions makes me hope that the rips are actually perfect after the start.
I will actually be trimming the start / finish of most of these tracks to remove silence using Audacity.

This is the 1st time I've used EAC to rip a CD created using my Sony CD recorder deck.
The CDs I'm using are TDK CD-RWXG, which are CDDA consumer RW discs. Rather than regular data RWs.
They have been used in the past, but ripped with CDex. But there's no visible marks on the reverse of any of them.

I will try a different CD-RW and a different set of tracks tomorrow and if that makes a difference.
Then if not, I guess it is something strange with the way the Sony RCD-W3 writes to the disc.

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas why this is happening with this particular CD?
Is it a major problem I should be worried about?

Thanks

Ben

You may need to turn on the spinup drive before extracting option.

Hi Firon

Thanks for the suggestion.
Just tried it though and it's not made any difference.

Just thought it as weird how the only errors it detects are at 0:00:00, apart from the 1st track which is fine.

Still need to try it with different tracks and a different disc I guess is the next step.

Thanks

Well, if you can't hear anything at those so-called suspicious positions, and especially if the CRCs match with test and copy, then there probably isn't an issue at all.
Are you using burst mode?

I've read of problems using stand alone CD recorders and EAC before. But I only recall the first track being a problem.

Go with test and copy and ensure matching CRCs.

The recorder is an audio (not computer) device, and you're using CD-RW discs in it, right?  I wonder if this is somehow related to Track At Once vs. Disc At Once type recording.

Do you record an LP track at a time?  e.g. record a track, pause the recorder, cue up the next LP track and unpause to start recording the next track?

Or do you record the entire disc, then use the recorder to set track markers *after* the recording is complete?

brendan, I think you might be on to something regarding TAO.

batfastad, have EAC perform a gap detection (F4) and tell us the results.

Did you try ripping with a read sample offset correction to see if the problem goes away?  Try +48 for starters.  For giggles, try +1000.

I'm wondering if the suspicious position can be moved to the end of the track.

Hi everyone

Sorry for the lack of reply - didn't have reply notification on.

Yep the recorder is a hi-fi separate CD recorder (Sony RCD-W3) and using those special audio CD-RW discs in it.
Regular data ones that are 10-a-penny don't work in it.

To confirm, there's no audible problems with this at all.

What I do is record one track, then stop the recording.
Get the next track cued up the next LP track and press record again.
Then stop and...

There are some tests I still need to do here...
1) Try another disc to see if it happens - but I reckon it's just a funny thing with the way my recorder sets the TOC and track markers.

2) Test and copy and ensure matching CRCs

3) Run a gap detection and post the results

4) Read sample offset correction.

I will try those over the next week and get back on this!
Thanks for all your suggestions!!!
