Scanning media library in background?

Hi there. I've got a fairly large collection of mp3's, and it takes a long time to index them all, and whilst it's doing so it hogs all of my CPU resources. Is there a way to have it do this 'in the background' as it were, so that my CPU can do other things at the same time?

Also, is there a way for it to only scan files which aren't already in the library? Many thanks.
