DVD-HDD Recorders with DVB-C

I am looking forward to buying a new DVD-HDD recorder, but only realised today that by 2010, there won't be any analog TV in Germany making a normal recorder useless unless you connect it to a receiver. We already have a receiver for DVB-C, but the thing is that you would have to connect the receiver to the recorder and the recorder to the TV. Everytime you want to watch something using the receiver, you would also have to power the recorder since the receiver has only one output. Another problem is that with one receiver, you cannot record a channel and watch another at the same time. Two receivers from the same company would lead to conflicts with the remote control.

Anyways, I was wondering if there are any DVD-HDD recorders that have a built-in DVB-C receiver. I saw some for DVB-T and I think DVB-S. Also, there are some receivers that have a HDD built-in, but they don't have a DVD writer which is also pretty important for me (if I want to archive something or give a recorded show to a friend).

Seems that there aren't any DVD recorders that support DVB-C according to the people I asked. Guess I will get a TechniSat receiver with HDD and connect it over USB to my PC whenever I want to record to DVD. Any idea how much fits on an 80 GB HDD?

Briefly 33 to 100 hours depending on quality setting.

I have an analogue-tuner HDD/DVD recorder from Packard Bell. It has many shortcomings but it was cheap on eBay and does a decent job, though it has numerous bugs.

In Super Long Play (SLP) mode, where quality is fairly good if you have a noise-free signal and it reports 76 minutes per gigabyte and you can get just over 100 hours on its 80 GB HDD. When paused and zoomed in some of the visual compression artifacts show up around edges, and in fast-moving pan shots for sport, some areas of grass become devoid of detail until the panning stops. Generally for watching back programmes, SLP is fine. Other modes by increasing bitrate include EP, LP, SP+, SP, HQ

I believe SP is very much the standard for pre-recorded DVD movies and is reported as 25 min/GB (or about 33 hours on an 80GB HDD or about 2 hours on a 4.7GB DVD+R/RW).

All these modes are MPEG-2 video, the same used for standard DVD video, allowing you to burn DVDs directly without transcoding.

By connecting via USB, I guess you're implying that you'll directly capture the broadcast MPEG-2 video from DVB-C without the recorder having to re-convert (transcode), so the number of hours you can store in 80 GB will depend on what bitrate is broadcast for the channels you typically watch over your cable.
