User interface freezes, but playback continues (0.9.4.1)

I know this is major thread necromancy, but I am also having the same problem, and I thought I'd see and get help for two people rather than just making a new thread.

However, when I double click on the track, the interface is still frozen but it will play the clicked track.

If you're using an output method other than DirectSound, switching to DirectSound should take care of it (link). I'd had the problem myself as well.

EDIT: This with 0.8.x, I failed to notice you had 0.9.4.x.

Somewhat oddly, I have lost my my directsound device; I've tried system restore, do you know how I can restore it at all?

Try completely uninstall your sound driver and then reinstall it.

Well, I sort of forgot this thread; but I tried changing to direct sound (after I ended up having to reformat - whoops ) but to no avail seemingly. Do you know what could be causing it?
