One MP3 on an album won't play

Hi - I've copied an album off a friend (that is I copied the MP3s from his hard drive, I didn't rip the CD myself), and one particular song on the album won't play in Windows Media Player. I get the message:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

The tag info doesn't appear on Windows thumbnails either, although they are there because I can see them in MP3TAG. And the song plays okay on my Samsung MP3 player, so it seems to be a problem with Windows not being able to read the file rather than there being anything wrong with it.

Any ideas how I can fix this? Apart from don't use WMP!

assuming that you have the right to use this music... *ehem*

ask your buddy to provide an md5sum of teh files and verify that the transfer went OK before pulling your hair out.

and do yourself a favor by finding something other than WMP...

Sorry - didn't even stop to think whether I should even be listening to the record in the first place.

I'll just go and buy the CD and copy it myself and solve both my problems.

And look for an alternative to WMP too!

Or check the tag is correct, wmp has been picky on reading the tags with me.
that program solved it for me, but I don't know if it will with you.

I should probably find out why wmp is picky on my system sometimes! lol

If your file has an ID3v2 tag at the beginning, the tag might just be too long and the player just gives up in finding a sequence of valid MPEG frames.

As j7n said, it's usually a tag problem. You can fix this by removing the tags from the file, and then re-adding them via some metadata lookup scheme (WMP has AMG built-in).

For problematic tags, I use MP Repair Tool.

If that fails to solve the problem, drop the file resulting from the above operation into foobar2000 -> right-click file -> Utils -> Rebuild MP3 Stream.

In all but the rarest cases, the first step should be sufficient to solve the problem.
EAC>1)fb2k>LAME3.99 -V 0 --vbr-new>WMP12 2)MAC-Extra High

Hey, that worked! Cheers!

(Haven't used Foorbar since trying it once and getting lost trying to set it up. Downloaded it again just to try this. Think I might give it another chance now)
