Preset are better?

I have a question, why extreme setting is better than chosing... for example vbr between 160 and 320 kbit/s? What are the features that makes extreme preset better (if there are anyyy)?

I dont understand how presets works.

Thanks

I think that the presets have some kind of filtering. I must admit I'm not sure, but more curious.

Looks like you guys are missing out the good old days at r3mix.

The presets use optimized, automatically adjusting algorithms to give you the best sound at a given bitrate (standard = ~192kbps, extreme = ~256kbps). The algorithms were tuned based on results from extensive double-blind listening tests so that the presets would be able to satisfactorily handle just about anything thrown at them.

What makes them superior to high bitrate VBR is that they are tuned above and beyond what you can tweak through the commandline. For instance, with high bitrate VBR you must pick a single noise measurement mode (-X) to be applied to the whole encode. OTOH, the presets vary the NM modes dynamically, offering a better balance between quality and bitrate than is possible from one fixed setting.

You can get very good sound from the high bitrate VBR modes but using the presets gives you a better guarantee against artifacts. The presets aren't perfect and they never will be but they take the guesswork out of trying to get consistent high quality sound.

*sigh*
IrYoKu, use an --alt-preset (--preset, whatever).  Did you just read what those guys posted about those presets?  They are better.  They will give you smaller size & better quality.

I suggest using --alt-preset standard.  There's really not much of a reason to use --alt-preset extreme.  It also doesn't sound like you've really even tried standard, so I wonder why you are jumping straight to extreme automatically.........
