Recode AVC file with weird artifacts

So, I felt adventurous and decided to encode my Austin Powers Goldmember Region 1 DVD to AVC. While I was happy to see that Recode actually finished encoding the file successfully, without crashing halfway, the joy didn't last long. After watching the video, I noticed strange artifacts.

The first issue is visible on cross lines. It looks like bad deinterlacing, which is strange since it's a R1 DVD:

The second issue are artifacts on top of the screen. Especially visible in the second clip when his hair touches the top of the screen. Small blinking black squares appear:

Anybody else noticed this?

Well...what settings did you use ?

I used the Cinema AVC profile. Only thing I changed was that I disabled letterboxing. 7 hours later, that video came out.

probably something to do with 'Psyho-visual enhancements', try to disable those and recode that hair scene for testing.

dunno about 1st one, they both look like c*** thought.

edit: did you feed the recode with avisynth script that was also resizing? (since the overall bad quality looks like there was double resizing.)

Nah, it's encoded directly from the DVD with AnyDVD doing the decrypting.

It might be "Psycho-visual enhancements" related, but the point is, those are the default settings. Does that mean all Average Joe Nero users get those crappy results?

and rescaling was set to auto ?

since if you calc the bitsperpixel value the result is really low, you would need about twice the bitrate for that frame size...

-------
A good rule of thumb to use is to choose a bit rate that results in a recommended value of bits per pixel or BPP

BPP = BitRate * 1/FPS * 1/(W*H)

Where BitRate is in bits/second and frame rate is in Frames/second.

---

BPP= 729000 * 1/24 * 1/(720*368)

BPP= 0,1144
-------

anyway i think your results are a combo of low bitrate + way to agressive psy

We are just guessing here. The fact is, those are the settings that  Nero picked for me automatically. If I want to tinker with stuff manually, I will use AviSynth + x264 and all that crap. I wanted a simple automatic solution, but it seems that Nero is useless. I was hoping for a comment from some Nero people, but that is in vain I guess.

Oh well, I guess I'll stick with XviD.

and xvid does everything automagically?

Well, you can do it manually, but you also have great free automatic solutions like AutoGK.

Oh, and with Xvid I have the advantage that my DVD player will play it.

Problem1: To me this is a problem related to the resizing method. Perhaps recode is offering resize method choice, and using a faster one by default?

Problem2: This is not caused by psychovisuals. It seems a little strange to me. I understand how encoder's internals could cause this, but this would be a bug then.

The video is 720 x something (can't check right now). So, actually, no resizing should be necessary.

And the other issue, well, if it's not a bug, then... Hmm, no, it's a bug anyway you look at it IMO.

Your MP4 file has vertically resized picture. Original is 576 or 480 (pal or ntsc) while your one is 3xx, so Recode resized it.

Original is 480, but that is uncropped. I just checked, the video is 720 x 368 (AR 853:368).

Edit: Ah, I know what you mean now. But if that is a bug in the resizing routine, that'd be a pretty obvious bug.
