How to get audio via digital/spdif from LTR-48246S ?

Some drives have play/next/stop buttons just like a cd player and also a headphone jack and volume control on the front that allow you to use it as a standalone drive. It also allows you to bypass the PC's IDE bus and use the spdif connection at the back instead for playing an audio cd. or just use the headphone jack on the drive.

The LTR-48246S does not have play/next/stop buttons but it does have the headphone and volume control. The only way an audio CD can be played on this drive is by using any software player (like foobar). The drive also has the 2-pin spdif/digital out connector at the back. How do I operate the drive so that I can play an audio cd via the spdif output only ?

The other drive in that pc is an unbranded (or maybe i/o magic) dvd rom drive that has those buttons and so I am able play an audio cd via the spdif out connected to the soundcard's digital input internally. But I can't do that with the LTR-48246. Or can I ?

Assuming for the moment that you're using a Windows OS, you can go to the hardware properties of the device, and change the setting "Enable digital CD-audio for this CDROM device".

If it is enabled, using the Windows CD-player software will playback the audio through DAE - that is, it is streamed over the IDE bus. If it is disabled, it will output the audio over the audio headers on the drive, including the spdif header.

You'll still need the CD-player panel to control the drive, though...

yes its Windows ME.
actually it plays via ide/dae even if the "Enable digital cd..."  is disabled. No other headers are connected except for the ide cable. So I think that option has no effect on the ide connection, and it is for switching between the 2-pin digital and 4-pin analog headers/connections.

Actually, I'm quite sure that is not the case; the spdif and analog headers will usually both be active.

Did you use the Windows standard CD-player? Maybe Fb2k always uses DAE...

Maybe this helps: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271647/EN-US/ - specifically, it says "You must turn off the Digital Audio Extraction feature in both Device Manager and Media Player."

My curiosity: since you say it works fine, what's the reason for wanting to change it?
