problem with teac540e

Is there a problem with my TEAC CD540E (40x CD-ROM). I have installed new firmware and Teac Speed Utility. There i selected Read CD-DA and set it to x17-x40, but when i ripped with EAC it went slow (approx. 11x speed). Is that normal. I read that it should be higher ( http://www.ping.be/satcp/eacoffsets01.htm ).
Could this also cause bad rips???

Please help

I don't know about that particular drive, but if you look at the settings-Offset/Speed for the drive in EAC you will notice a setting that allows EAC to reduce speed during extraction. This is to make sure you get a good rip.

I am sure if you test this you will find it is OK. Some 40x drives, and others, are not very good for digital extraction, I know, I had one (a Philips). They work, but at much lower than rated speed.

I believe that gettin 11x out of a 40x CDRom drive while ripping audio with EAC's secure mode is actually quite fast.

Just think that you are getting a 100% perfect digital copy of the CD, and it is taking you less than 10% of the time it would take you to listen to it.

That's a good deal to me.

EAC's secure mode reads up to 16 times a sector when it finds an error, so that can reduce speed quite a lot. Clean the cds before ripping them, and woe in pain and agony if they are badly scratched, because then the ripping is gonna take a long time! (but still will be the best you can get)

For your info, I usually get 7x with my 52x LG drive, so you are actually making me feel jealous

I assume you have C2 on (otherwise you would not get such a high speed)? Because if you want a perfect rip you should dissable C2 with the Teac540E. I know it reports that the drive supports C2, but it is not working correctly (I have the same drive, so I know that). And if you look around in the EAC forums you will find reports of other users, that C2 should be off with this drive. But other drives have problems with C2 also... If you turn off C2, the speed will go down, but you get a perfect rip. Hope this helps.

maybe enbabled C2 is the reason i sometimes (it is more audible on headphones) i can hear some strange clicks and pops??? i thought that the scratched CD was a problem...
well gambit could you tell me all the settings you have on EAC...
and yes.. are you using teac speed utility... if you do do you recommend it?

Hi Air_Borne

My settings:
Accurate stream: checked
Drive caches data: unchecked
C2: unchecked

I do have the teac speed utility and I use the middle speed setting.

This works perfectly for me.

Try to rip the songs where you hear clicks with this settings, if they are still there.
You can also try to "test and copy" those tracks with C2 on. If you don't get the same CRCs than C2 is causing the problem. As I said when you turn off C2 the speed is slower but you get a perfect rip.
See ya

I have this faboulous CD Reader also, and I just did one try to extract a CD with EAC in secure mode.

It did the job at 17x, and no problem was reported.

But it is clearly explicited in the Teac readme that even if it is set to 17x - more, the extraction may be slower, because of the CD quality / scratches / whatever

I indeed have some old CDs (old metallica's CD press from early 90's), and they really give problems when ripping

Gambit and BC-A:
I just did a rip without C2 and with Teac speed utility set on x4-x10 (first option).
The speed was approx. 2.8x ....

Does same happen to you? Because to me it just seems too damn slow...

and one more thing... is quality of the rip depended only upon cd quality, cd-rom quality and the type of program you use. is there something else i forgot to mention?

Is it possible that my laser or whatever is damaged on my CD-ROM? Could i just somehow clean my CD rom, so my ripping results would really be optimal...

I'm working with the Teac CD 540-E since 18 month now.
I suggest never to use the highest Speed for DAE (17-40x), because it will produce significant errors on Audio-CDs longer than 50 minutes (They put it into their utility just for testing). With EAC in secure mode you will get the same average speed (ca. 11x, right) in middle speed (8-20x).

This works fantastic with all my CDs, even those with some scratches.

With pressed CDs which seem to be absolutely clean, you can try EAC in burst mode, then you'll get (as the Teac speed utility indicates) 8 to 20x-speed (beginning - end of CD), 14x average. This won't produce any errors on
good pressed CDs.

For CDs that don't look very well, use 4-10x speed and EAC in secure mode.
