The forum and the wiki

I've been thinking about this for the last few weeks.

How come the Wiki isn't more integrated in to the forum?

[For example]
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Forum Home > Audio Compression > MP3 > MP3 - General
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Forum Home > Audio Compression > MP3 > MP3 - Tech

Both sub topics should have a sticky that has a direct link to the MP3 portion of the Wiki, asking users to participate with adding information to the Wiki (knowledge base).
[/For example]

It seems to me like the Wiki and the forum are treated like two separate entities; I really think they would be more effective if the Wiki was intelligently integrated into the forum with links, which it would give the impression of the forum and the Wiki having even priority in the H.A community

I'd like the wiki to be more integrated too...

but.. there is no "MP3 section" at the wiki.
Also we already tried making the wiki the portal... which didn't work at all...
I really don't know how to get people interested in the wiki.

The wiki language is cumbersome IMO. The other day I tried adding a foobar config in the wiki and lost half an hour figuring out how to enter a code block... And I am not a computer newbie.... No matter what I could not make it look like the way I wanted (see below that there is some issue with long lines).

see here: [a href="http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Foobar2000#Track_Info_Panel_.28foo_uie_trackinfo.29]http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?ti...ie_trackinfo.29[/url]

Finally I gave up...

However I do not see an easy way to make it less cumbersome... Apparently wikis are not easy even for more advanced users... This is just my opinion, of course.

You make codeboxes by starting with a blank space, " ".
Code: [Select]
" this is code"
" and so is this"

" due to the linebreak this is a new codebox"

I made a guide here: http://www.rarewares.org/wiki/index.php/Help:Editing
that should help people get started. I will add that to HA wiki soon

i know that, but it's more advertising the fact that the Wiki is there.

Most forums have a FAQ that is stickied to the top of each sub forum, why can't we do that with Wiki.

Whats [a href="http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=MP3]this[/url] then ?

maybe the wiki needs to be reorganised so it will work with the forum.

We could make a sticky with that. It can't link directly though... (I think... maybe I can do some html forwarding... I'll check that later.)

I thought you meant more like the mp3 section in the FAQ. Directing people to that mp3 page doesn't give them much answers to common questions I am afraid... maybe that should be changed though...
I hope we can move the current FAQ to the wiki and use that instead... then people can add things like the links the FAQ has now.

I just tested. We can make a sticky thread (re)direct to a wiki page.

One thing that i keep thinking about is if we put these links in the forum, will more vanalism take place in the wiki?

Maybe users should need to register at the wiki for them to edit it.

[dreaming]
Or even better, somehow make it that a HA users account links to the wiki, so if any one abuses wiki they get banned from HA aswell.[/dreaming]

Dunno. we probably will get more vandalism. So fra IP banning have been effective so I don't think it will be much of a problem.
