Best portable MP3-CD player?

Note about firmware upgrades with the DMP-01, you lose all your previously stored settings.  For that reason I hesitate to upgrade to the 2.02 (also because it may be hacked, and there may be unknown bugs with the DMP-01).  Thirdly, the v1.05s (imho) works fine!  If it's not broken, don't fix it.

2c worth... (same with the motherboard, don't flash unless it's necessary).

BTW, in regards to DMP-01's that stop working... check the laser, and attached ribbon cable.  Apparently the ribbon cable can overheat and lose the connection, or perhaps come loose from the laser mechanism.  Could just be a matter of undoing some screws and a quick fix.

It does?  It does!

Now I need to lie down after trying to read choice phrases like:

Therefore never pull out the plug of nourishment and take out batteries from pleyera na to motion, without having turned off preliminarily pleyer by pressure on knob/button Stop.

Did anyone notice all the text in the readme files included in upgtools.zip are in russian, but all the text when you actually run the checksum or r2s utilities is entirely in english? I looked inside the EXE files, and there does not appear to be russian versions of the same text, just the english....

And the previous poster was correct, the USA site did have the patched firmware in "soul_v202us.zip" (matches the DMP-01.HEX I just created from the iRiver 2.02 firmware using R2S). I still have no idea why they considered upgtools.zip as Warez.

hm, hm, if we are counting peanuts....
according to (German as example) law it would be allowed to publish the patch program.
As that is mostly free software without copyrights.
The already patched and fixed firmware would be illegal (or more illegal compared to distribution of the patch program...) to publish, to distribute, because probably the IRiver 2.00 FW is copyrighted to iRiver.
So http://www.easybuy2000.com/store/downloads...ware/index.html  Easybuy2000.com is a little bit bravehearted...

But probably AVC and IRiver don't mind about it, as such cost-free (for them) development makes their players even more famous, so they gain more buyers.

Woo!  I got the SlimX, and 'tis quite nice!  =D

The only complaint I have is d**n that display screen is small!  =p
Not to mention the default earphones suck, but so do all ear/headphones that come with players.  That's why you get your own set.  ^^

i recently flashed my soulplayer with iriver 2.02 and one big favor is, that disc loading time reduced from about 20 sec. to about 2 sec.

so 1.05s actually *was* broken for me.

Hi, Does anybody nkow anything about this player?
I guess it is marketed in the US under this name as it is in Italy.
According to the features, it should be a great price/quality choice, but it sounds a little too nice to me.

Thanx in advance

the player is pretty good. i think it's compareable to the iriver chromex exept the battery-life of the dioneer is a little lower and it is a litte more lightweight than the iriver, so thats more or less personal preference. from what i know it should be a save buy.

ps: the soul player II (or dmp 200) is technically the same device in a little different case (they are even firmware compatible). just in case you want to know...

Seriously?  That does sound like a nice benefit.  Maybe I'll have to think about it after all (but not looking forward to setting everything back to the way I like it, AGAIN).

Maybe I'll wait awhile longer though, to make sure there aren't any negative effects on the player reported (it doesn't seem likely, but remotely possible with a hacked firmware).  Did you notice any change in battery life after flashing (positive or negative), or is it too early to tell?

yes, seriously.

i don't see any problems in setting back your preferences. there are maybe 10 relevant options, you can't need any longer than 2 minutes for that...?

i did not notice any negative effects so far. tested for several hours. the firmware is not "hacked" that much. in fact only the string for the player name is replaced. i used the r2s conversion tool for that (link can be found in this threat).

can't tell any difference in battery life so far, did not test enough, but my very subjective impression is, that battery life improved a bit (can anyone tell more here???). at least is did *not* decrase

Oh hell, I'll try it.  I get tired of waiting that 20 seconds too, & suppose I could always flash back to 1.05s.  Thanks!

Edit -- update finished, I used the copy at the Geocities "tommysoul"site... don't know what I was concerned about, it took 5 min. to set my preferences back (I'm picky about the on/offs in the modes, & other settings so I wrote them down).  You're right, it seems to start up faster once the firmware is loaded.

I've been using that firmware for some months, and have found no negative effects.

A few months ago, it just wouldn't load CD's anymore. Whenever I insert a CD, it jerks around for a few seconds and displays "NO DISC". I happens with CD-R's, CD-RW's and even brand new pressed music CD's.

did you clean the lens ?

Of course! They've probably received hundreds, if not thousands, of such requests already. One thing you can count on is that iRiver's response will always contain the same copied-and-pasted content:

iRiver has planning to support Ogg in the future with firmware upgrade, however, the schedule is not finalized yet. Please kindly wait.

And so we wait...

I recently bought a Dioneer DMP 100 (also after an advice given within this thread).
I must say that it works fine, reads perfectly VBR tracks and it is quite quick while loading new cds. It can save the last 14 different cds so you do not have to wait all the time.
The display is small but quite good, the only default I got is that the title of the next track does not scroll, so you only see the first 5-6 letters.

In Italy it costed me € 195, which is more than USD 100 (more or less USD 185). If you can get to that amount, it might be a good buy.
As far as Italy is concerned, for USD 100 you only can get players like Waitec Tanky, which is not really good, probably it is not even an average player.

www.exportmp3.com (~275 euro with shipping)
www.mp3wiz.com (in Korea, costs 150 dollars, and 50$ bill for customs, but it's a little bit dubious...)
