FLAC files low in volume?

Hello,

I've just begun the process of ripping my CD collection to FLAC format. I'm using the guide to rip a complete .WAV image, then compress this with FLAC frontend (using WinXP).

However, I notice that when playing the resulting .flac file back in either Foobar or Winamp, it is of considerable lower volume than the uncompressed .WAV file. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?

Also, as a test, I tried to follow this guide - here, and the  FLAC file was now played at the normal volume.  The cue sheet however, listed the flac file rather than the WAV. Again - is this normal? I always assumed the cue sheet was only for the uncompressed file....Perhaps my misunderstanding of the files purpose.

Would just like to clarify, before I do anymore CD's

Much obliged for any help.

Did you replaygain those flac files? That will usually give you a lower playback volume.

If you did readup on replaygain.

Hi,

just curious, what Guide are you referring to. I'd like to try it out also.

Thanks!-
