Any suggestion on how to backup my huge MP3 collection? I'd like to use CDs as support...am I wrong? And what about filenames? Thanks Ciottano.

Nice hint: use Burn to the Brim
http://bttb.sourceforge.net
to burn your CDs using most space possible.

Well, there's always the plague of max 64chars filename when using Joliet filename table in CDs. You can use Romeo table (Using NTI CD Creator only, it seems) to be able to use up to 128 chars in filenames. But Romeo has some compatibility issues with some Operational Systems.

Romeo should be safe if you only use Windows newer than 98.

What do you think if I zip my Mp3? Now I'm going to sleep...bye bye

Bad idea. Then, you won't be able to play them directly from the CD. Will have to unzip the files you want to play to the HDD, and then play.

(You can use some "hack" winamp plugins that unzip the track to your temp folder and play from there. But it's not recommended, and, definitely, it's SLOW - gapless is near impossible this way, since it unzips the files one-by-one)

Last, but not least, ZIP is a shitty format. If your CD ever gets scratched, the chances are big that you'll lose all your tracks - not only the ones located at the scratched area. In this case, it would be safer to use RAR without solid compression or ARJ.

You could use cdcreator too...

i like this for filename: "artist - album - yeartrack - song"
for VA: "VA - album - yeartrack - song"

its hard to surpass 64  characters....

DON'T ZIP YOUR FILES... It's useless.... mp3 is already compressed....... and you can't listen the files directly from the CD....

Listening to MP3s directly from the CD is not a good idea IMHO, the CD ROMS spins at max speed (40x) with, depending on the drives, a lot of noise, and it'll shorten its life.
It takes 5 minutes to drag'n drop all the mp3s from the CD to a dedicated folder on the HD. You can even do this while listening to an mp3 previously drag'n dropped alone.

As mentioned in another thread, it is not very difficult to limit the cd speed (and noise).  When I run my cd player at 4x it is totally silent. This is enough for music and even some divx.

rjamorim: could you give me a link to the NTI CD Creator?  I'd like to check it out, sounds like it might be handy for me, I run Win XP, and I'd like to get my music off my HDD, it's getting old and the last thing I want to do is lose everything because I don't have it backed up...I've already done that once

The interface is indeed ugly, but it's very easy to use and packed with features!

I don't want to listen to my Mp3 directly from CDs, my purpose is only to backup them and preserve their original file name.
