HydrogenAudio .COM or .ORG

Since dibrom now has all 3 domain names for HYDROGENAUDIO (.COM, .NET and .ORG) now, should the site's main entry domain name be changed to HydrogenAudio.com or kept with HydrogenAudio.org?

Either way the three domains should all point (re-direct) to whichever address is chosen to represent the primary domain name.

Please vote for your favorite to help dibrom in case he decides to make a change in the primary domain name that represents HA. Your comments are welcome also.

Though, I admit, it is rampantly misused, .com is supposed to refer to a company's website.  .org is supposed to refer to a organization's website.

Is hydrogenaudio a company?

.com no longer represents a  company name. It was intended for that a long time ago (circa 1994 or 1995), but it has now been opened up to be a gTLD (general/generic top level domain), as is .NET and .INFO, and can represent anything (not just company web sites).

There is no misuse here. That is how ICANN (who administers the Internet) has allocated and defined it. .COM is more professional (to most people) than .ORG, and hence .COM domain names can sell for between 20 and 200 times the value of their .ORG counterparts. .NETs usually go for about 1/10th of the .COM value (general rule of thumb). Hope this helps.

Also if you check the type-ins on a search engine like Overture, the .com variation of a domain name usually gets way more type-in traffic than the .NET or .ORG, as more people attempt typing the .COM variation into thier web browser first.

Not trying to start a feud here, but rather want to see as many people as possible find our great resource that we all love in Hydrogen Audio. I have learned much here and many others I am sure have also.

Although the designations are no longer enforced, still the impression remains: .com is corporate, .org is public/non-profit etc. We definitely want to project the latter image.

If we do mess with the host name, here's sound advice: drop the www. Apache can do it effortlessly.

Dump people like me enter .com at first if it is not a german site.
It would be easier to find!

Edit: Ups! Like tangent said before - redirecting would be enough and even cooler!

My point exactly. While most of the users here on HA aren't domain name experts, I happen to be a regular on DNForum.com and DomainState.com where we (domain professionals) talk about domains all day long.

Having the .COM version of a domain name is worth much more than it's normal perceived face value, but also in the MANY people who type in the .COM version of the domain looking for a particular site (in this case HA). Glad to see you got the .COM version of HA dibrom! Glad a porno site didn't get it instead...

This is a poll rjamorim, and if you don't care for this discussion no one's forcing you to participate in this thread

I appreciate your input on audio matters and have learned much from your posts here on HA over the many months I have participated here. But a domain name expert you are probably not. Just giving my advice to dibrom in an area I know more than a little about...

If you guys want to keep HA an audio "techies club" than by all means feel free to do so. But I think HA should extend and embrace the "average Joe" users out there who are having audio problems and seeking answers to their audio questions.

(Isn't freedom of speech a wonderful thing).

It's not about not caring for discussion. It's that this thread has gone horribly awry. People discussing an absolutely uninteresting matter that is completely out of their hands, people using God's name in vain, people actually complaining about it... Jeez! (ops)

I actually never knew such a field of expertize existed

I have my own domain (rjamorim.com) and I'm pretty happy with it (thanks Radu!). I doubt my firend consulted a "domain expert" before registering it for me.

So why call a poll for people that have no expertize on "domains"? And why start a public discussion about it at the first place? If you want to share your deep expertize on "domains", go talk straight to Darin!

Good Lord! (ops)

I can't believe you really think a target audience is defined by a domain suffix! These "domain expert" forums must be making you nutter!

Me.

Well rjamorim,

Being a Christian Minister, I feel very strongly about people taking God's/The Lord's Name in vain or using it so carelessly. Cursing and profanity have no business on a public forum such as this IMO.

Yes there is a field of "Domain Professionals". Check out the 2 sites I mentioned to learn more. Some people buy and sell domains for a living.

I am also an audio enthusiast (using audio and the Internet for Christian ministry). I also specialize in buying Christian domains for use in ministry. I saw HA.NET available and decided to reserve it for the purpose of possibly giving it to HA, which I have now done. Would hate to see an awful site put up there or on .COM.

As far as the reason for the poll. I think it is healthy to discuss something like this, as most people don't realize that having HA.ORG is actually losing many potential visitors to HA, instead of having .COM. Now that dibrom has bought .COM and has the .NET I have given him, he alone can decide on the fate of the forum. Just wanted to give him our input.

Well there is a .com now and it will be redirected to the current .org site. I don't see what is the problem here, and what is the purpose of this poll exactly..

Well, you just recently wrote you consider freedom of speech a wonderful thing. Freedom of speech allows people to take the Lord's name in vain, curse at the lord, and utter satanic mantras. Just learn to accept some people don't take the Lord as seriously as you do.

As for the rest of the post: Yawn. As if we didn't already have enough zealotry here, we are being introduced to .com zealotry. I rest my case.

What benefits would the increased inherent value of the .com suffix bring to HA? More advertising revenue?

Btw hasn't the Bible taught you, a Christian minister, that Christian discipline is enforced on a personal level, and public accusations of sin is not going to win you more conversions 99.9% of the time?

If some of the admins/mods wants to open this for discussion again, split the thread first.
Though imo there's not much reason to continue the original topic anymore, and the latest messages went totally off-topic.

Anyway, I want to thank guest0101 that he was kind enough to hand over the hydrogenaudio.net domain name. Thank you.

Thread closed for now.
