Free HE-AAC encoder?

I would like to try out HE-AAC, but what applications support it and are there any free encoders?

Nero's demo version encodes for free.

but enoghu to hear AAC-he being supperio to lowbitrate mp3.

HE-AAC should only be used for 96kbits and down. for 128kbits and abot you should use normalt AAC

I think that in the Nero 6 demo, encoding is only limited to the duration of the demo, number of files is unlimited. But I don't have the demo so I can't check to be sure

Okay. Thank you.
Does this mean that freeware HE-AAC coding is impossible?

HE-AAC coding technology is not free.

A non commercial HE-AAC encoder is very possible in the near future.

Currently there is no non commercial HE-AAC encoder.

as digital radio mondial uses he-aac the chance is maybe not that small that maybe we once will see a freeware he-aac encoder...

Why? Digital Radio Mondial is purely for broadcasting, no consumer encoding needed for that at all.

I do see possibilities for free HE AAC. Someone just needs to implement it in FAAC.

why?
because it maybe makes he-aac even more popular...
at least it doesnt hurt the situation to get a freeware encoder

Not really. ePAC isn't getting more popular because XM radio is using it. As far as the end user is concerned, it doesn't matter a bit what coding scheme the broadcaster is using.

What about SBR implementation?  Do you need to license it from Coding Technologies?  That would make a free HE-AAC a bit harder to realise probably.

No, you can implement SBR based on reference sources and documents.

hmmm...I thought SBR technology was patented so it wouldn't be legal for one to try and replicate it.  I was under this presumption since I asked a while ago about implementing SBR-like technology to improve Vorbis and someone said that was not possible since Coding Technology had patents on this concept.

Well, most of AAC technologies are patented and still you have Faac freely available.

Vorbis is meant to be patent free, that's why an advanced technology such as SBR can't be implemented on it. It's not because the patents prevent an open source implementation.

Only in source form, right?  Since we don't see faac binaries officially posted on audiocoding.com

Ah, so that's the reason.

Right, although it seems the licensing authorities are becoming less strict. To the best of my knowledge, nobody ever complained about decoder binaries (in_mp4) being available at AudioCoding.

It's no different than the MP3 situation (regarding encoders).

I know that the EU-Parlament has decided that software patents are not valid, since the patents are no longer valid in the EU, does that mean they cannot force you to pay any licence within the EU for encoders, decoders etc. and you can freely distribute binaries of your own software if it´s not based on any example code etc. (of course only in EU, Brasilia and other free countries, not USA or Japan)?

Winamp 5.0 can encode to AAC for free. But they limit the CD reading speed. And I don't really know if it is HE.

Just an OT question. Does anyone here know how to encode multiple files to AAC-HE on Nero? Thanks a lot.

Multimedia coding patents are considered hardware patents, so yes, they are still valid at the EU.

It isn't.

Just load the files in Nero "Encode Files..." list. One other way is to use Foobar2000 with Nero plugin.

EDIT: I haven't test Nencode yet, but i would guess that it can do the job also.

It has been said about n+1 times already that these are not software patents..
