aps with 3.93.1 and 3.90.3(recommend)

i used to use lame 3.93.1 with aps but recentely i discoverd something
scrolling through the forum i saw the 3.90.3 was recommended well
i checked it out ( difference in quality etc)
and i saw this : --alt-preset standard with 3.93.1 gives a lower bitrate than
--alt-preset standard with 3.90.3

example:
*linkin park cd meteora, song 3 , somewhere i belong
  bitrate with 3.93.1 = = 234kbps
  bitrate with 3.90.3 = = 246kbps

*will smith cd big willie style ( ripped as image + que sheet)
  bitrate (generally) with 3.93.1 = = 193kbps
  bitrate (generally) with 3.90.3 = = 200kbps

seems like you guys are right, 3.90.3 is recommended

somebody an explanation for this?

greetz

Look at the lame changelog.
"To understand me, you'll have to swallow a world." Or maybe your words.

3.90.3 isn't an official release. Don't forget that --alt-preset standard isn't the same anymore with 3.90.3 ; in order to perform a fair comparison, you need to compare --aps (3.90.3) to --aps -Z (3.9x).
-Z switch improves quality in some rare cases, but the bitrate is probably higher on most files.
Wavpack Hybrid: one encoder for all scenarios
WavPack -c4.5hx6 (44100Hz & 48000Hz) ≈ 390 kbps + correction file
WavPack -c4hx6 (96000Hz) ≈ 768 kbps + correction file
WavPack -h (SACD & DSD) ≈ 2400 kbps at 2.8224 MHz

so 3.90.3 is beter than 3.93.1? or --alt-preset standard (3.90.3) = = --alt-preset standard -Z (3.93.1)

3.90.x were more tested than 3.93.1
3.90.3 is better on some particular samples: -Z is correcting some of --alt-preset flaws (search, for exemple, the thread about "erhu" sample)
I don't know any sample or can't remember anybody claiming and proving that 3.90.3 --aps is better than 3.93.1 --aps -Z.
