Nero 6 AAC encoding

Does the new Nero 6 offer the option to encode AAC files from WAV files or only directly from a CD (rip and encode in one step). I ask, because I like to edit many WAV files before encoding.

Also, (I know this was in another thread but I cannot locate it) did Nero prove to be the best AAC encoder or Quicktime?

Which AAC/MP4 encoder does my chosen program, dbPoweramp, use?

To answer your questions:

Sure Nero 6 can encode directly from a WAV file to a MP4 (AAC or HE AAC) audio file as well as ripping them directly from a CD. It also includes a Wave Editor program like Sound Forge XP where you can modify and apply effects to your wav files before you save them in MP4 audio format (or any other supported audio format).

Nero came in a little behind QuickTime Pro in the test, but they used CBR (Constant Bit Rate) only in the tests and not VBR (Variable Bit Rate), as Quicktime didn't support VBR encoding of AAC files.

Also note that Nero can encode both AAC and HE AAC (High Effectiency) AAC files (the ones designed to sound better at low bitrates), while QUickTime Pro can only encode AAC LC and not HE AAC encoding within MP4 files. So for my uses Nero 6 is better and sounds great IMO.

I don't use dbPoweramp, but I believe it only uses the FAAC based MP4/AAC encoder or the Psytel one. I am almost positive it can't use the Nero 6 one. So you are limited to lower quality encoding (if using the FAAC based one) according to listening tests. Psytel is closer to Nero 6 in the test, but neither can encode HE AAC audio to to licensing issues. Nero 6 is the only software encoder for the PC that I have seen that can encode both AAC LC and HE AAC files (.MP4 format).

Hope this helps...

1. Yes you can encode to aac from a wave file.

2. QuickTime beat it by a millimetre.

3. PsyTEL 2.15

Quicktime might beat Nero's AAC encoder at 128kbps CBR, but when you put VBR encoding into the mix, Quicktime's lack of a VBR mode makes the previous listening test irrelevant. In my own listening tests, Nero's transparent preset (110-150kbps) beat Quicktime's 160kbps mode every time. For this reason, I consider Nero's codec to have the highest quality at this point.

There's no way to use Nero's encoder with dbPowerAMP?  The conversion options are nice, but I'd like to get the best quality I can, and VBR really seems like the best thing for that.
