Network Players

I'm having a problem with the way a network player sorts thru music files and the relationship with the way files are tagged.
Here's the problem I rip a cd to store on NAS with Foobar, and I tag the files at this time (I rip straight to .flac) I fill in /Artist / Album /disc-track#/track title/date/Genre. Most of the music in my collection is unreleased live recordings. So the file structure on the NAS is
A-G, H-M etc then Artist or Band name folders then show folders for that artist. I take this folder name (abb1970-07-05.sbd_ex-.Atlanta Pop Fest) and use as the album tag.
Now when I use the Network player (Marantz nd8006) I have to either browse by Artist or Folder due to the number of shows. I open the album folder and all the music flac files are in alphabetical order of their tagged names. Not in the disc track # order, so for listening to live performances this is very unacceptable. If the flac files are not tagged the player will display the file name and play in order. I could just not tag and be okay but eliminates most search options.

So is there some way to make the player sort by disc/track# instead of track name? Or is there a way of tagging that would eliminate this problem, I've thought of putting the track# in the name, but that would screw up searches, because I Know You Rider isn't the same track in every show preformed.

What are you connecting to for your player to be able to find the files? I.e. is it DLNA? If it is then try the settings in the DLNA server. Programs like Serviio allow for customisation of just about anything.

Since your response I've gone back and read everything I can find and there is no mention of DLNA just a bunch of apps to connect to different devices even the internet radio is a service, and there is no browser interface with the unit. The unit this Marantz replaced was a Pioneer N50 and it featured DLNA via Twonky. and it had a browser interface, I just couldn't get it to play gapless flac files.

I also played around with it some more, and found out that If I browsed folders or Artists and album folder the tracks would be in alphabetical order, but if I browsed by album the tracks were in the proper sequential order. I don't have enough life left to browse by album though. It's one thing to browse hundreds of artists and another thing to browse thousands of albums.

So Twonky is your DLNA server then. You should be able to play with Twonky and see what it's doing, or use another DLNA server like Serviio :)

Had a quick look at the Marantz
Indeed it supports DLNA
If you browse by folder (the file system of the NAS) of course everything will be sorted alphabetical, that’s the way filesystems on computers work.
As you already mentioned, the only way to get the tracks in the right sequence is to prefix the filename with the track number.
You probably have to use 2 digits because if you do have more dan 9 tracks you get 1, 10,2…

If you browse by album, the tracks are in the right sequence as now the tags (disc / track number) are used.
However, it looks like that your problem is most of al a clunky interface of the Marantz.
Most of the time we don’t browse by album but do a search e.g. “Beethoven symp” to narrow down the list.
If this is not supported by the Marantz, you might try another interface.
This can be a Android phone with a DLNA compatible media player like BubbleUpNP
A PC will also do. Even WMP is DLNA compatible and offers a play to: option.
In this scenario you use basically a “remote” to select the tracks and let the Marantz do the playback.

The reason why I suggested Serviio is you can configure custom playlists and you specify how data is organised and displayed etc.

This is exactly what I don't understand, when I open the folder, if the tracks are not tagged the marantz sorts by file name. But when metadata is added the player now ignores the file name and the disc/track metadata and goes straight to track name metadata. And why would it evaluate tracks differently in Album mode?

The Marantz has a search function, but I've tagged only a fraction of the music I've loaded to the NAS so search won't get everything yet (I'm working on at least Artist and Album for everything)
I did open up Windows Media player and it does recognize the Marantz under "Other Libraries" But WMP does not recognize .flac files. I'm going to play around with the media players mentioned Bubble and Serviio.
