3.94 allows the combination of aps an q0, but this will not improve quality. It will only reduce file size. You have to use abr/cbr in order for it to improve quality.[/qote]

would a combination of --preset medium -q0 also be advised if encode time is of no concern?

In comparison to [proxima], I find that 3.94a15 --alt-preset cbr 128 is much improved in the case of fatboy.wav compared to 3.90.3 (the type of artifacting is totally different - 3.90.3 sounds very harsh in comparison to the new alpha). When comparing the two, Encspot shows that 3.94a15 uses far fewer short blocks in comparison to 3.90.3. Also, I am unable to ABX between --alt-preset cbr 128 and --alt-preset cbr 128 -q0, although the latter is much slower.

what's the difference between "Safe Joint Stereo" and just "Joint Stereo" ???
--alt-presets are there for a reason! These other switches DO NOT work better than it, trust me on this.
LAME + Joint Stereo doesn't destroy 'Stereo'

I think --nssafejoint(or --nsmsfix?) is used or not used.
