Webradio Recording Quality

Hello,

I was wondering if there is anyone who uses web radio recorders. I am thinking of getting a radio recorder software to record music but my question is, stays the quality of the music the same? Many tools advertise that the quality of the downloaded music is the best but I don´t know what to think....

Do you mean for recording the streams? If so it'll only ever be as good as the stream. They can't be made better.

No conversion happens unless it is a dumb tool. The stream is just dumped to disk.

One station I would time-shift doesn't seem to have a directly available stream.  You have to play it on radio.com (web page or mobile app.)  It's talk so I can live with transcode degradation, but the other complication is my new(ish) Windows 7 computer doesn't have an audio setting to record the output channel like XP did.  Is this part of Msoft's DRM enhancement, or is that a difference in the audio chip?

Also, anyone know if there's a normal (and accessable) stream behind radio.com?

In the recording devices window, right click and make sure "show disabled devices" is checked.
It should appear then. If not, i dunno. Maybe try updating your driver.

That did it.  Then just clicked on enable. Odd to take something that used to work, disable it, and hide it.

I have a Windows 7 laptop, and the disabled devices are not hidden. As I didn't know about the right-click thing that Andrew recommended 'til about 5 minutes ago, they must have been visible by default on my machine but hidden on yours.

yep, I mean the streams. I am wondering if the music I save has the same quality as when I listen to the radio station.

The web page makes you sit through an ad.  The android app goes right to the stream.
It looks like CBS is the company behind radio.com, though this particular station is independent.

As good as an answer that can be hoped for has already been given:

"No conversion happens unless it is a dumb tool. The stream is just dumped to disk."

To do a confirming technical test would require cooperation from all of the web stations, which seems to be unlikely.

My question to you is why do you think that the recordings are sonically degraded?

I can give you a possible answer - the more often you listen to something, the more likely you are to hear its flaws. The recordings might be sonically perfect representations of the original streamed audio, but the more often you listen to them, the more likely you are to become aware of their sonic flaws. These flaws, if you become aware of them, probably come from someplace else than the recording process itself.

I heard at some point some recordings from webradios and they seemed to be stuffy somehow...I don´t know how to explain...the sound wasn´t quite clear and the recorded mp3s didn´t seem to have a very good quality
