foobar and HDMI streaming

I currently play .flac audio files (up to and including 96/24 5.1 LPCM, and flac-wrapped DTS/AC3 files)  via foobar with the WASAPI plugin, out of laptop via HDMI cable,  in to a Denon AVR via HDMI port, f2k decodes FLAC and the AVR does all decoding of the audio formats (i.e, DTS is decoded in the AVR, not the laptop)

What I would *like* to do is eliminate the HDMI cable.

Could I use something like Chromecast to do this?  Is some other device more appropriate? Would I also need to install foo_upnp?

Obviously this is new to me....pointers appreciated.

Try UPnP/DLNA Renderer, Server, Control Point 0.99.48.

Right, thanks, but also wondering about the hardware to receive the signal at the AVR end.  Since I currently 'stream' everything via 'hard wired' HDMI, I am assuming I should continue with a wireless receiver device that has an HDMI output.  Chromecast is one such, but it appears to require/use its own player interface (or maybe just Chrome).

As for the Chromecast part of your post: Chromecast needs an app which supports it. foobar is not such an app. There may be workarounds (idk, I don't have a Chromecast; it seems there are workarounds such as transcoding using Bubble UPnP or Plex). But Chromecast is not a wireless HDMI cable.

I've never used one, but have you looked at wireless HDMI devices?  Basically a transmitter that you plug into your Laptop's HDMI port with a receiver that plugs in to your AVR.

I connect my denon avr 1912 to Dsl Router via ethernet. The foobar is working as media server.

Would happily do that except the router is at the other end of the apartment; would need to add a closer secondary wireless base station, or run ethernet cable/ports throughout the place (which i am actually considering, given how many issues it would solve).

I've lately realized that my laptop had WiDi, so I am giving this device a try later this week

I use one of those from my Surface 2 to my Denon 4520. With the latest firmware, it seems to work quite well. Since my Surface 2 is ARM based, I'm limited in what I can run (that's fine), so I can't run fb2k, but I do use MediaMonkey to stream FLAC music from my PC running Asset UPnP to the Denon. It works well (but MediaMonkey has been promising an update for over a years now with no results, so I would really, really like an alternative).

A Chromecast should do what you want though I've never personally tested with Foobar. On the assumption that you're retaining the PC (that's how it reads) along with Foobar then you will need the UPnP plug in. Almost certainly you will need to transcode on the fly to a supported format such as WAV (FLAC is not natively supported according to the supported media page for Chromecast). You will need an Android device to control playback along with UPnP client such as BubbleUPnP or similar. Some music players also support playback to Chromecast but your issue is access to your music library hence retaining the PC as you music source.

I have video library on DNS-323 and access this via full version of BubbleUPnP to Chromecast and Yamaha AVR. I've recently also spotted AirWire on the Play store and that looks like it could be worth a try as well and lists Chromecast as a supported target. I'd be interested in how you go as I want get music playback and likely will use Foobar and uPnP component. Good luck.

Edit: Spelling.

I installed the foo_upnp plug-in and played back OK to Chromecast connected to Yamaha AVR. Playback control was via BubbleUPnP client on Nexus 7. First time I've used Foobar and BubbleUPnP for music. Actually quite nice with album art etc all displayed. My library is located on DNS-323 NAS in FLAC image + cuesheet. This is then shown as album + track on the BubbleUPnP client and in correct track order (by comparison my Patriot Box Office media player showed the tracks in alphabetical order). Replay gain and DSP etc is also possible. Might look at a more permanent solution.

For DSP try George Yohng's VST Wrapper  and TesslaSE VST Plugin.

In the end , the Push2TV didn't work as needed for me, so today I returned it.  It (or Intel WiDi) always wanted to run through the Windows mixer, and it ouput everything as 'surround'. So I *was* able to get 5.1 LPCM to work, using Foobar2k and the DS:Intel WiDi Device output option, but not DTS or Dolby digital (those require bitperfect output; WiDi/PushTV was doing something to the bitstream, so the output was just hiss).  Foobar 2k WASAPI plugin , which I normally use for bitperfect output, did offer a WASAPI:Intel WiDi device, but I could not get it pass the streams.  So that killed it for me.

I *think* I had the latest firmware for the Push, but not sure;  I did try updating it.  I also had the latest intel WiDi version installed on my laptop.
I tried using 'extended' video output in WiDi (which ups the resolution to 1080) but that didn't help.

It was an interesting experiment, if nothing else.
