How do I get high res. album art from iTunes? Only get 170x170

Please help me to get high resolution (800x800 or 600x600) album art from iTunes other than 170x170.

Whenever I have accessed album art from iTunes, either embedded in purchased files or downloaded for ripped ones, it has been 600×600 (at least). When I wanted to extract an image to a file, I could do so by selecting the Artwork tab under Get Info, clicking on the picture, doing a Copy (by the keyboard shortcut or the mouse context menu), pasting into Preview (one could also use Paint, etc.), and saving as PNG.

So I don’t understand your problem; are you saying that you get low-resolution images for all albums? Or might you be trying to retrieve them in the wrong way?

iTunes can handle a lot bigger files. Just right click on the music file, chose "get info" from the drop down menu, click the "artwork" tab, click the "add" button and browse to the picture you want to add (it doesn't matter the size).

To edit more than one file highlight all files to be edited right click them click "yes" in the window that appears and paste the picture in the little artwork window in the right corner of the form that is displayed.

If iTunes have problems displaying the added picture try adding the picture from a web browser (I don't know why it works but it works): right click the picture file and select  "open with" and then chose web browser. Once the picture is displayed in the web browser right click the displayed picture and click "copy" from the drop down menu. Then proceed with the previous instructions.

When displaying artwork in iTunes the limit will be the size of your screen. To display a large picture just click a symbol consisted of small triangle inside a square that appears on the bottom left side of your iTunes window. That will open a square window on the bottom left side. Every time you highlight or play a file the file picture will display in that bottom window. You should then click on that window and that will cause the picture to be displayed in a window in it's full size or up to the maximum size of your screen.

Apparently, Apple now prevents other application beside iTunes to access their high-res album covers (anything larger than 170x170).

Previously, people could download high-res covers from apple store by changing resolution in url.
For example,
Code: [Select]

It will give you 170x170 Requiem for a Dream soundtrack cover art. You could get higher resolution (doesn't work anymore) by changing 170x170 to 600x600 or delete them to get original resolution uploaded by publishers.

So, currently the only way to get cover art from Apple Store is to use iTunes. Though resolution will be limited to only 600x600.

In case someone want; high-res cover of Requiem for a Dream.

See, this is the kind of information that people might think to include in the first place, as most readers aren’t psychic.

Seems to work on Firefox. Since I can't see I made some tests with a sighted person and things appear to work as expected. There may be an easyer way of doing this, but this is my approach.

Right-click on the cover and choosing image properties. The cursor is already placed on the URL with the 170x170 resolution. Right-click again and then copy. Paste the URL in the address bar and change the resolution in the URL. Hit enterand the image will be opened. Hit save on Firefox.

You get this.

the program mentioned earlier in the thread has no problem downloading 1200x1200 itunes art for most albums i've tried. sometimes it drops to 600x600 but i've not seen it go lower than that.

Album Art Downloader XUI

just be aware that because something is 1200x1200 doesn't mean it's good quality. some time ago i acquired a lot of 600x600 art for my collection mostly through manually searching google images. i've since found 1200x1200 images on itunes and they look far worse than my original 600x600 images. if you don't have a point of reference, you might not care but i'm just saying there is some crap out there. i've found some good stuff as well but it's all a bit random.

Quite off-topic, but I can recommend albumartexchange for good quality front covers. Though I don't know if Album Art Downloader supports it, I always add them manually to my files.

AAE block all 3rd parties/programs from accessing their images. you're stuck with manual downloads via a browser from there.

i can't even access it at all because my ISP is blacklisted. i guess it's because i use a mobile broadband provider over 3G.

going off topic some more, i've noticed amazon have started posting some really nice 1500x1500 images on their website recently. an example:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/B1uf...VS._SL1500_.jpg

it seems to be for brand new releases only though.

That sucks. I am used to the manual process so no big deal, but why block third party access? What, are they the owners of those images? Don't think so...

Yes, noticed it as well on both of John Mayer's latest albums. I assumed it was because he apparently released his covers under a free license, but glad to see it's happening in general. Good news.

it's not hard to understand why. bandwidth costs money and then there is the loss of traffic to their website/ads/revenue.

if i could access AAE myself, i would acquire what art i'm interested in and upload it to the coverart archive (musicbrainz). at least that data source is always going to be kept open. (i hope i'm not being too naive )
