[ToS #6]Migrating from a Portable to a Standard Installation

Hello everyone, I just downloaded and spent about 30mins setting up Foobar2000 since I'm a bit sick of Winamp.

I wanted to know where does the player store its' settings (Preferences, layout etc.), since I installed a portable version and completely set the player up as I wanted. The only thing that is missing now is the file type association (it's a drag to open the player every time and open the my music that way instead of double-clicking the media).
If, for example, both portable and normal versions store their settings in a file then I will have no problem changing the installation type.

What version are you using?
Instructions will be a bit different depending on whether you are using the 1.1 beta or not.

In a portable install, your profile (aka configuration) folder and your fb2k install folder are the same folder. In a standard install these two locations are distinct.
So we need to pick the files out of the portable folder that belong in your profile folder and copy them there.

To do this you need to:
  • Run the installer, install in standard mode.
  • Choose to Run fb2k after installing (it should a blank, new fb2k).
  • Shift-click on File and then go to Save configuration.
  • Shift-click on File and then go to Browse configuration folder which will open an explorer window. And then close fb2k.
  • Open your portable install location. Highlight everything in the Portable Install folder that also exists in the profile folder. (you can hold the Ctrl key to select multiple things)
  • Copy it and paste it into the new profile folder.
  • If your portable folder contains a "user-components" folder, also copy that to the new profile.
  • Rerun fb2k and make sure you didn't miss anything.

Different optional components may save different files in your profile, so if those components don't look right or aren't functioning correctly, you need to try and figure out what extra files need copied over to the new profile.

Oh thank you, I got it!

So Foobar2000 keeps the settings files in Application Data folder.
