Title: Why has the --ns-bass setting been removed in LAME 3.99.x?
Post by: NeoRenegade on 2012-01-07 15:35:25
I noticed that somewhere between LAME 3.98.4 and 3.99.3, the --ns-bass setting has been removed. Can somebody explain why this is?

I removed it to make things easier and clearer. I gave up the --ns-bass/--ns-alto/--ns-treble options in favor of a minimum audio bitrate demand which I guess is easier to understand for most people and more desirable, especially as a reasonable minimum audio bitrate is defaulted for the various -Vx+ levels.
IMO it's a good thing to just have to use -Vx+ instead of standard -Vx.

I think "3.99.x" means official LAME 3.99...3.99.3, not "functional extension 3.99.3x"

Yeah, I didn’t write “3.99.x”, that was written in by a mod who decided that the thread title “ns-bass” wasn’t descriptive enough.

As for standard Lame robert announced that he would remove the --ns-xxx options in 3.99 (not sure whether it was in a PM or a thread).
He uses them internally.

Ah, okay. The reason I was wondering, is because for a long time, I had been using --ns-bass -8 on 128kbps encodings based on the advice of… somebody somewhere.

So I guess if such things are done internally now, it’s not something whose effect on quality I ought to worry about anymore, huh?
