Title: 4Front Headphones for foobar2000 (dsp)
Post by: gyohng on 2003-11-30 16:51:56
The plugin is designated specifically for headphone users.

4Front Headphones model a real room echo response and thus avoid direct ear pressure. Listening is very natural and possible discomfort is vanished.

Algorithm is based on a reverbaration, taken from OSS/3D plugin.

Plugin page: http://www.yohng.com/headphones.html (http://www.yohng.com/headphones.html)

Direct download link:  http://www.yohng.com/goodies/headphones1c-i.exe (http://www.yohng.com/goodies/headphones1c-i.exe)

Instructions: run installer, then activate through Foobar2000's DSP Manager

Thanks,
George.

I'll be the first one this time: Why not a *.dll?
I was about to try this, but it's not that important to me...

I don't know if there are some limitations with dll-files, but I prefer them because they make everything plain and simple.

Installation instruction:
1. download http://www.yohng.com/goodies/foo_dsp_headphones.dll (http://www.yohng.com/goodies/foo_dsp_headphones.dll)
2. download http://www.yohng.com/goodies/ospitray.exe (http://www.yohng.com/goodies/ospitray.exe)
3. copy DLL into components of foobar2000
4. copy EXE into windows\system32

Most of users find simplier to run installer and press Next->Next->Next->Finish

Thanks,
George.

Thanks a lot. This is just great. It's the best/most reallistic stereo -> binaural DSP I've tried so far (Sennheiser HD 540 here).

Some suggestions:

Obviously the DSP does several things (simplified):

- Change frequency response = responsible for sound location (near vs. far away, in front of the listener vs. above etc.)

- Apply crossfeed (= mix channels so sound from the left channel reachs the right ear & vice versa).

- maybe something else (secret?  ).

Instead of having one slider, it'd be good to have one for each thing. I like the sound moved far away from my ears (slider 70-100) but OTH with this setting there's not enough stereo separation. Sounds that are almost completely located in one channel are moved in front too much with this setting. Besides it would be good (if possible) if frequency response could be changed in a way that bass isn't attenuated that much. AFAIK low frequencies can't be located anyway, so leaving them at the same level wouldn't do any harm to the effect, I think.

Try OSS/3D demo, it has some more options...

I'll be giving three OSS/3D foobar2000 copies for free, maybe you will have one.

You could use foo_dsp_wider to fix that. And maybe the EQ to adjust the frequency response.

Thanks for the answer. Of course there exist workarrounds as you suggest, but if the plugin is configurable anyway, I thought configuring these things directly would be better. Besides, at settings near 100 the plugin seems to produce near-mono sound, so foo_dsp_wider probably won't help much.

I've done a few tests with fb2k diskwriter + CoolEditPro using 1-sample clicks and sine sweeps. It seems like this plugin adds several equalized, attenuated, delayed echos to both channels. So I think it wouldn't be difficult to seperately adjust
- equalization
- volume and lenght/fadeout-speed of the added echos
- crossfeed level

What I'd really like to see is a impulse response / convolution plugin that can use 4 channel impulse responses (or 2 two-channel impulse response files):

1st channel: left -> left
2st channel: right -> right
3st channel: right -> left
4st channel: left -> right

For simulating symmetric setups 2 channels (1 for 'ordinary', the other for crossfeed convolution) would be enough too, assuming that in this case applies: 1st channel IR = 2nd channel IR and 3rd channel IR = 4th channel IR.

Anyone? Garf - need to get chess out of your head?

I haven't seen an equivalent of "4front headphones" in the OSS/3D site (including screenshots). Have I missed it or do you suggest using the other plugin(s) additionally as some kind of 'workarround', similar to what ssamadhi97 suggested?

BTW, you might want to post this over at head-fi, I think some people there will like it.

4Front Headphones is a particular hardcoded preset of OSS/3D with room size tuned to 13% and a bit of cross-feed turned on.

Also worth trying: crossfeed plugin + headphone plugin

Interesting (curved) Soundstage:
Sounds like a semi-circle to my ears.

@gyohng: Thanks for the dll and the description

I do like this plugin, I won't use it with foobar2000, but IMHO it's great for watching movies with headphones. In fact I had just forgotten that I have used it once before with Winamp for that purpose.

My only problem now is that I don't like WMP9. Is there a way I can make it work with Windows Media Player 6.4 (aka mplayer2) or Media Player Classic?

I don't think that for now it is possible to run it with mplayer2, but later, I'll probably make a system audio handler, that will work with any application.

Winamp2 now is ok to play video, and it works with 4fheadphones well.

Thanks, gyohng. I've played a bit with OSS/3D and got some promising results. It'll take some time though to find out what exactly each slider does and how to use them to get what I want.

edit: installer problem seems to be allready fixed (-> other thread).

I don't like this plugin always stay uncool icon in the tasktray.
Why not merge preference window to foobar's intereface?

I haven't set a permanent rule (KPF) yet to allow fb2k launching the .exe causing the tray icon. If I hit "deny", there's an error message, and the tray icon doesn't appear. The plugin still works and can be en- and disabled with fb2k DSP manager, but the settings can't be changed anymore obviously. So if you have found the settings you want you can either set a firewall rule to block the .exe or rename it so it won't be found anymore.  I don't know if the second way is allowed according to the license though.

If you delete/rename ospitray.exe, you'll be getting a delay and an error message.

If you can live with that, it's not a problem.

Maybe you release this one for the advertising of another shereware. If you want to make this better,I have request

Please make only dll if possible.
please include foobar's preferance to your configure window.
I don't like more window for configure.

If it is not possible hide icon in the tasktray,Please make it more good icon.

The site hosting this plugin appears to be down. Is there a new location for it, or can anyone suggest something that would produce the same effect?

I use his plugin when listening to my headphones (I've got Beyerdynamic DT 911. Does anybody know if they got a good name?). I set "virtual room" to 18%, any more than that makes the effect to recognizable I think. And yes it really does help reduce the stress on ears/head/psyche significantly during long sessions of headphone listening.....
Anyways; there are other foobar plugins that aim at more or less the same, discussed in this thread:

Hi there

I discovered a problem using the above mentioned plugin with the latest betas.

Normally the tray icon of the plugin disappears after closing foobar. In 0.9.4 it does not and I have a foobar process in the task manager without foobar running.

Otherwise the plugin works, though. It's not a big issue just a little annoying.

I reinstalled 0.9.3.1 and everything worked fine so I think the problem is not about the plugin.

anyone?

Who can confirm this or tell me whether there has been introduced a change in the shutdown procedure of foobar ... quite possible as the change log reads 'Startup/shutdown speed optimizations'.

I'd just like to know whether I should contact the developer of the plugin.

I have used foobar for several months now, I have loaded and used various plugins, and customised foobar without any major issues.  Recently I installed these plugins.  eq10v2-i.exe oss3dr7-foo-demo-i.exe.  I have foobar2000_0.9.4.2.exe.  I have XP sp2.  Using C-media pci audio card CM18738 without issues.

After loading these plug ins ... fooplayer no longer opens.  It shows as a process running in taskmanager, but it will not show, display.  I have tried several ways of opening/running it.  I can get as many processes to run, but the application will not open, or play.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled, etc.  No luck.  Any suggestions.

Check if the Foobar process is running. If it is, kill it and then lauch the exe.

I had this problem on one PC and in this way it worked.

Otherwise I can't be of any help.

Update regarding the .cfg file.  I opened it in notepad and its obviously corrupted.

I am going to uninstall and reinstall.  See what happens.

Problem Solved.  Your a genius.  The cfg file was obviously corrupted.  I manually deleted.  I also noticed I had another fooplayer installed with all the necessary folders and files under another profile.  So that too may have been the problem.

Anyways...I uninstalled, and cleaned up files & folders.

He installed.  I'm listening right now.  Ta Da.

Just have to load up plugins and other customizations.

Thanks

Don't assume it was corrupted because opening it in notepad didn't look good - the config file isn't a text file but a binary file, so you can't edit it with notepad.
It was probably still corrupted - caused by whatever plugin you installed last, but I just wanted to point that out, in case somebody reads this here and declares his own config as corrupted because notepad doesn't show a human readable file

Good Point
FooPlayer is working okay, i havent reloaded the plug-ins.
I'll have to watch the last plugins, or redownload them, and see.
I understand - and by elimination it has to be the last plugins.

Well its April 2007 and guess what.
I'm back to what happened with my first posting.
Fooplayer wont open.  And guess what.  I had forgotten about installing those same plugins...
for OPSI and EQ.  4Front EQ10 for Various Players Setup    and  4Front Headphones Plugin 1.0c Setup.

I had just upgraded to 0.8.4.3 from .4.1.  And as coincidence would have it, same time tried those plugins.  Resulting in exactly the same situation.

Processes run, fooplayer wont show or open.

So...I am uninstalling them, manually removing them from DSP components.  If u dont hear back from me, that worked, and there is some issue with those plugins.

foobar2000 + ospitray leftover processes after closing fb2k.

No such problem with 4frontheadphones + Winamp.
