Title: iPod Doesn't Recognize Artists
Post by: Sampulz on 2012-05-31 20:47:45
I've been having this annoying problem lately with foobar where when I try to add certain songs to my iPod, I can't find them in my Artists section. It sends to my iPod just fine and I can find the songs in the songs section of my iPod, but when I want to listen to just that certain artist, I can't find it in the Artists section, even though it clearly has the artists labeled when I look at the metadata when i hit "Properties".

The weird thing about this is I don't have this problem with any of the other songs I've downloaded elsewhere or uploaded to my computer from a CD. This problem only happens with mixtape albums I download from the site Datpiff.com. When I check the metadata on those certain songs, it looks like those particular songs have an extra section in the properties called "ITUNESCOMPILATIONS" or something like that which is why the only place I can find them on my iPod, other than the Songs section, is the Compilations section. So I deleted that section from the metadata on those songs, and it worked for a few of the mixtapes I downloaded from Datpiff, but some of them still don't show up.

I only have this problem when I add songs to my iPod using foobar, so this is why I'm asking here, rather than in Apple support or Datpiff, so it seems like it's a problem with foobar and I would appreciate it if someone doesn't redirect me to those sites.

I'm on Windows 7, I'm using the latest stable version of foobar, and my iPod is the 160gb classic (5th gen I think, not sure if the firmware's updated either).

Yes, that is exactly why. Given that said field must have been added by whoever created the files for that site, I am at a loss as to why you subsequently state that this seems like a problem introduced by foobar2000. Which takes us to this:

Using what? foo_dop? Have you confirmed that other programs, e.g. iTunes, circumvent this problem? Presumably they would then not be honouring the ITUNESCOMPILATION field, which would make them errant, not (again) foobar2000.

Anyway… Short of removing the field – which has a purpose exactly in line with mixtapes and the like, i.e. to stop your list of artists being filled with numerous ones from whom you may only have one or a few tracks – you can use your iPod’s settings to choose whether or not you want files containing it to be grouped under Compilations; if you disable this option, each individual artist will appear in the list, as you appear to want.

Can I move this out of Support as something that’s nothing to do with foobar2000, yet?

Yeah, tried other programs like Winamp and iTunes (well I would if I didn't have to sync my whole library and lose my files) and I don't get the same problem. I'm just trying to figure out why it would only show up in Compilations and not the Artists section even though the artists are labeled and I've removed the itunescompilations section from the metadata. In fact, when I did that, it worked on some of the tracks, but some of them still only show up in compilations and I can't see them in artists. The files aren't completely different files, by the way, their just regular mp3s. I didn't know if I made that clear when I said "mixtape".

If there's nothing I can do, then just move it. It's no big deal

They’re probably not set to use their analogous option of grouping compilations under one section.

This is more interesting. Do those files have the album artist set to Various Artists or something else that would cause them to be grouped away from their per-track artist?

No, I’m sure you can find a way to enforce your desired behaviour – at some stage in the pipeline between file and iPod inclusive. All I mean is that it might not be a problem with foobar2000, which is the purpose of this subforum. Placement aside, the discussion itself is perfectly fine if it can be informative to you and possibly to other readers. And hey: if you have found something that’s not being done properly, everyone wins!
