Nokia has joined Apple in calling for a change in the video code requirements for HTML 5. Specifically they want the W3C Working Group to drop the requirement that browsers and devices support the Ogg video and audio codecs.

That is not surprising to many of us.

If we except a few technical issues within the Vorbis specifications, that could be easily solved by Xiph, there is still the huge patents issue.

Many of us already voiced our concerns about this, and Xiph position has always been the same (something in the lines of "We did a huge patents search, and found Vorbis to be safe. However, we won't tell more details, you just have to trust us").

Does this mean that HTML5 will haven't any audio codecs in its spec, doesn't it?

No, that doesn't.
That mean that there will be further work/review regarding inclusion of A/V codecs within the HTML5 spec, and that W3C will not rush A/V specs before further thinking/clarifications are made.

We're talking about a working draft here, not a final draft.

Seing how corrupted the patent system is today, i don't really see the issue there. Every inventor believes his invention is ok, till some other sues about it. It has happened to large corps, apple, sony, microsoft, etc. So, why would be this different? Many big companies have already implemented Vorbis, EA, Sansa, etc, which means that if a patent troll was waiting for vorbis to be implemented, he should already have sued. I don't see any patent issue. Or i'm missing something.

We already had some topics regarding the Vorbis & patents issue, and they provide some interesting views regarding Xiph's position about this.

The positive point is that if there are patents issues regarding Vorbis, they should not last more than a few years anymore.

Does any public answer of Xiph to those patent accusations and removal from HTML 5 exist ? Except "Letter to Nokia" got "marked historical" without revealing any reason ?
