Won't start on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

I installed foobar2000 on my Ubuntu Server 18.04 with xubuntu-core (xcfe) GUI installed using the instructions here:
https://www.tecrobust.com/install-foobar2000-linux-ubuntu-latest/

Before installing foobar2000, I had installed WINE 5.0.  After installing foobar2000, it wouldn't start,  I rebooted, and still no joy.
Here is the terminal output:
Code: [Select]
marc@PET310S:~$ sudo foobar2000

I'm not sure if the issue is with foobar2000, snap, or WINE.  If it's with snap, or WINE, I'd appreciate it if someone would suggest the best forum to get help with whichever seems to be the issue..

Thanks.

You're never supposed to run it as root or with the sudo command. Fix the ownership of the Wine prefix you're using with it. This is either specified as a path using the WINEPREFIX environment variable in your startup script, or the default of $HOME/.wine .

Thanks.  Where do I find my startup script?

I wouldn't know, there are probably many ways to run foobar2000 on Linux, and I have no idea which way you've used. I'd blame the packager if they told you to use the sudo command to run it.

They didn't say to run it with sudo.  I had trouble without sudo so tried it that way.

Here is the terminal output without sudo:
Code: [Select]
marc@PET310S:~$ foobar2000

0014:err:winediag:nodrv_CreateWindow Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
0014:err:winediag:nodrv_CreateWindow The explorer process failed to start.

I just ran this a couple of minutes ago.  It has paused.  I don't know if it's hung or not.

A. There's a section in wineHQ Faq about fixing problems related to using Wine as root https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ
but since you had problems earlier:
B. My suggestion after basic experience with installing foobar on Mint and MX linux would be to install it using:
- snap https://snapcraft.io/foobar2000
- or PlayOnLinux.

C. If it's an overall problem with Wine uninstalling everything related to it, deleting virtual drives/prefixes and installing one version worked for me.

Btw foobar works very ok-ish on linux for me:
- no  volume control
- some JSpanel scripts don't work  :'(
- there are some sound problems, meaning sometimes it works perfectly (distribution, Wine version)  and sometimes there is an unacceptable stuttering/noises (other processes or CPU load)
- old fixes (long lists of additional components to install) either don't work or don't work with win7 as a system (required by ColumnsUI)

I'm giving up on it.  I wanted it to easily do multiple conversions of .dff files simultaneously, but instead I'll do the conversions on my Windows box and then copy them to the server.  I'm using Amarok as my music player on Linux and I'm happy with it.

Thanks to all who tried to help.
