3.96.1 still recommended?

since 3.90.3 is dead, 3.96.1 can be still downloaded on rarewares. is 3.96.1 qualitywise better than 3.97b2 in -V 2?

what yould be the disadvantages of using lame 3.96.1 instead of 3.97b2 (in terms of quality)?

thx for postings

I know 3.97b2 is actually the recommended lame version, but please just answer my questions.

What I've experienced:

3.96.1 has issues with ABR/CBR (corrected with 3.97b)
3.96.1 has issues with -q0 (corrected with 3.97b)
3.96.1 --vbr-new isn't tested which makes this version slower
3.96.1 ABR/CBR doesn't handle very well quiet music at moderate bitrate (corrected since 3.97a6)
3.96.1 doesn't have the noise issue introduced in 3.97 and audible with tonal signal (corrected in 3.98a3)

thank you for these informations, so 3.96.1 seems to have no issues in contrast to 3.97b2 by using -V 2...? (In case of quality!)

yeah, thanks a lot! I think the last example you've listed above is most impressing. 397b2 -v 2 --vbr-new rules

You'd probably have wayyy "good enough" at lower bitrate settings, but indeed, it's quite hard to discern from the original, generally.

the reason why 3.96.1 is still up is because Lame 3.97 is still in beta. Most people here (including myself) seem to be using Lame 3.97b2 along with -V2 --vbr-new
--alt-presets are there for a reason! These other switches DO NOT work better than it, trust me on this.
