MPEG bigger than LPCM?

I want to put some clips to a DVD with PowerProducer, when it comes to choose audio stream format it seems that MPEG one have higher bitrate than LPCM one, so I can fit more material if I choose LPCM. I thought that if MPEG is lossy and LPCM lossless, the latter one should have higher bitrate?
