Installer project

I was thinking if anyone thought it would be of any use if I created some installers with all the must have plugins for winamp.

That would be mad, mpc, ogg, gapless output stuff, lossless plugins etc..

All the things that ppl on this forum tend to use.

The idea was that it would be easier to have your plugins updated to the most resent version without having to go back and forward to a million sites and install the plugins manually.
Many newbies would maybe also think of this as a lot easier.

One big installer.
One with in-put plugins
One with out-put plugins
One with dsp (if there are any good ones and if ppl use that kind of things)

Also different program packs could be useful I guess. (EAC, razorlame, speeks fantastic frontends etc.).

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Did a NSIS installer with the following catetories:
"All the plugins"
"MP3"
"MPC/MusePack"
"Ogg Vorbis"
"Lossless compression"
"Additional plugins"

" MP3 " is:

"MAD v0.14.2b"
"MAD documentation"
"Nullsoft MPEG Audio Decoder 2.76b69"

" MPC/MusePack " is:

"MPC/MusePack plugin 0.90b"
"MusePack documentation - English"
"MusePack documentation - German"

" Ogg Vorbis " is:

"Nullsoft Vorbis Decoder v1.17c"
"Nullsoft Vorbis Decoder documentation"

" Lossless compression " is:

"LPAC Decoder plug-in v1.00"
"Monkey's Audio Player v3.94b1"

" Additional plugins " is:

"Cd Reader v1.95"
"Cd Reader documentation"
"DirectMusic plug-in v1.55"
"DirectMusic plug-in documentation"
"MIDI plug-in v2.6h"
"MIDI plug-in documentation"
"Nullsoft Waveform Decoder v2.0c"
"Nullsoft Waveform Decoder documentation"
"read_file.dll, build 17/08/2001"
"read_file.dll, build 17/08/2001 documentation"

I would still need some feedback/interest before making the effort to mail all the author for approval before making this installer public.
If you like the idea please reply.
Anything that should be added/removed?

Did you leave AAC out because of patent problems?

There are lots more lossless plugins. WavPack, FLAC, SHN, RKaudio...
I believe at least FLAC and WavPack should be added to your pack.

I didn't think that that many used AAC.
I don't know about AAC. would it be legal? If so I can add it.

No, it wouldn't.

Does Denmark recognize bogus software patents? One of these days, someone's going to test that in court...

I will not add ACC if it's illigal, sorry.

that's old. get new read_file, it's much smaller. new in_wave is in wa2update (i think i was too lazy to upload in_wave.zip)

Maybe add some gapless output plugins?

Not that many uses MPC or OGG either. It's probably a waste of time to make this package of plug-ins. You'll be lucky if the majority knows that Xing is not the best audio encoder in the world.

man, xing is OK. some people actually still use blade @128kbps. yuck.
@Jansemanden: make sure that you ask plugin authors for permission first - about my plugins, it's all OK; but i guess that some people would prefer to be notified about including their software in such setup file (i kinda don't like people who include without asking - *cough* CDex)

Xing is not OK. It can't use short blocks, its quantization process is totally optimized for speed, its psychoacoustics seems to be one of the worst.
However, Xing new is better than old, but it's still far far away from "ok".

That said, I can't even begin to understand why Blade has ever had a reputation that it would be good?
It's useless to start comparing Xing and Blade, both are bad, so people should keep away from those.

hehe, only joking. yes, i've read that n times already; all people who use xing should be shot. but still, blade is much worse; when i said "ok", i meant that xing isn't exactly the worst thing that might happen to you when you download an mp3 (eg. see gamingforce.com FF8 OST. geez. those guys are deaf.)
anyway, let's don't turn this into xing vs blade discussion

Nullsoft's in_mp3.dll shouldn't be included, since almost everyone already have Winamp 2.78, and when 2.79 is released, it might overwrite the newer in_mp3.dll from 2.79.

Yeah I know. I was waiting to see if anyone was interested before making the effort.

hmmm.... yeah you right.
I'll remove that.
I think some of Peters plugins is also included with winamp though.

Yeah. I will have to see how big the installer gets first.
Anyway there will definitely be a separate output plugin installer.

well, in_midi/read_file shouldn't go there neither, as they are in winamp setup.
anyway, you can grab all the important stuff which has changed since last Winamp release in wa2update.

I just downloaded the big installer on your site and took what I found useful.

Be careful if you include MAD, if one MP3 Decoder is not disabled by the installer you will get double playlist entries, which is bad.

Installer project

I don't think that right.
You have to enable MAD thru it configuration.
You can surly have different decoders at the same time.
MAD disables others.

I'm starting to write all the authors but saw this in the MAD documentation.
from the MAD documentation:

Quote

Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option)
  any later version.

What does this mean? What is GNU?

@Peter:
The plugins that say they are nullsoft plugins (etc. the vorbis one) but are written by you.
Do I have to get permission by Nullsoft also to include them or is it enough that you gave me permission?

GNU Stands for GNU's Not Unix!  (Seriously).  But you are referring to the GPL, which is basically a license that says that you can re-distribute the code and binaries.  You also can use the code for your own project as long as you use the same license (GPL)

You must have heard of the GPL -- for one thing, it's the license that Linux is published under.
