f2k FLAC to MP3 fail error

Hi folks....long time lurker - learned so much around these parts over the years.  But now am in need of some help that I have never encountered before.  The culprit?  WIN 10-64Home.

Been using f2k for years as my quick, go-to player.  Just got a new i7 laptop with Win 10 on it.  Prior laptop was workhorse i5 Win 7 64.  Had zero issues with conversion of formats on the Win7 machine.  I basically cloned the settings and f2k install main and components folders over to the new Win 10 machine.  Most other f2k components I use work fine on the new machine.  But the primary one I rely on, FLAC to LAME MP3 now is refusing to work.   Quick machine/OS specs below and the f2k error message I'm getting.  I am using of course the latest LAME distro from RAREWARZ.

OS: Win10 64Home v.1803
RAM: 16GB
CPU: i7-8th gen
foobar v.1.4
LAME v3.99.5-64

f2k error message - this is 100% recurring with ALL FLAC to MP3 conversions I try.

Please help me out folks!  Have of course searched high and low but no recent similar examples to be found anywhere I knew to look.  So, decided to come here where the big brains hang... :)

maybe, you need a lame 32bit...

Using 64-bit binaries is fine. Can you encode a simple WAV file with the same lame.exe from command line?

Hmmm, perhaps here is a clue to my problems...?  And probably irrelevant, but I launched the CMD window with admin rights.

D:\AppData\LAME MP3 Binaries_x64>lame.exe -h -v 0 organfinale.wav organfinale.mp3
'lame.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Based on the original error reported on the console you performed your test in a wrong directory. Either you need to cd into "lame3.99.5-64" or call "lame3.99.5-64\lame.exe" for the test.

@Case, @lvqcl:  Doh!  Indeed, I was not in correct subdirectory, thanks.

Have corrected, testing in the final folder, LAME3.99.5-64.   Still getting an error, but now different errors.  Second example, I removed the -h switch, thinking that might be the "excess arg" error notation, but still no joy.

Folks, the bottom line is that I would dearly love to restore the f2K FLAC to LAMEconversion functionality.  I just have found it to be the most elegant, simple way as I use f2k as my main audio player anyway.   Of course, I can grab standalone FLAC to LAME gui utils to achieve the same thing.   But really want to try and figure out what's up with my f2k Win 10 install.

Maybe not really tasteful to ask on a f2k forum, but any recommendations for a reasonably granular FLAC to LAME gui frontend util?  I have grabbed opensource LameXP and it seems to work fine, but I appear to be unable to use different [more recent] LAME binaries with that util [for some reason.

Your parameters need some adjustment. The VBR quality setting is capital V and not v. Switch -v seems to be an alias for "-V 4".

@Case:  OK...fixed LAME command line, and now no errors.   However, seems I get a 0 byte mp3 file as a result.  Refreshed within Win10 Explorer and still 0 byte mp3 file result:

You should try with some regular sized file. It's very possible the encoder doesn't accept a file exceeding 4 GB.

Uh, that's a 4MB wav test file I grabbed online.   4,480 KB.  :)

Can you try different compiles of lame.exe? New (2019-07-03) 3.100 from rarewares or other one from foobar2000 free encoder pack.

GENIUS!  Thanks!  So now command line LAME 3.100 64 is working....now getting valid mp3 output.  Verified in f2k and plays fine.

So...folks....how can I now properly sort out my original problem with f2k FLAC to MP3 failing to even execute? 

I just tried copying the working 3.100-64 LAME.exe and LAME.dll into my foobar encoder subfolder...renamed the existing 2 files to .old extension.   Still fails with this f2k error:

1 out of 1 tracks converted with major problems.

So....how can I change in f2k the pointer to the command line working 3.100-64 LAME folder?  Can't seem to find the setting inside of f2k.

Silly me. Somehow I was thinking in kilobytes. Also I didn't realize you had copy pasted the full output from the command prompt. It would have also revealed that the encoder binary didn't print anything because it crashed.

If you didn't create a custom encoder for Converter where you pointed the program to always use the lame.exe from certain directory then it's enough to navigate to Preferences -> Advanced -> Tools -> Converter and clear out the "Additional command-line encoder paths" setting.

SUCCESS!!  I KNEW this was the place to get help.  Thanks so much to all you kind folks!  I did in fact setup the specific LAME folder in f2k....I just forgot where to edit it within the program. 

So clearly, f2k under Win10 64Home does NOT like LAME 3,99 64bit or older, at least in my case.  LAME 3.100 64bit FLAC to mp3 conversion works perfectly under both f2k and command line in Win 10 64Home.

This thread can now be closed.  Maybe someone else can benefit from this experience!
