CD Hardware/Software / Re: How to clean CD?
Last post by forart.eu -
Do you know how to clean an CD properly?

We do use *transparent* glass-cleaner spray (to reduce unwanted residues) 1st, then slight mist dryed by a microfiber cloth.

Black painting of the external CD edge - using a permanent marker - sometimes *may* (remember the GreenCD myth) help the reader to retrieve worst parts.

Using a better reader (that supports C2, slow speed ripping, etc) is, of course, the best option.

Hope that helps.

Opus / Re: Opus and replay gain
Last post by Squeller -
Must say I am totally confused about Opus and loudness metadata. What I got out if it is this:

- Opus doesn't store Replaygain (track/album) peak values because standard forbids, for whatever good reasons
- Trackgain/Albumgain values can be saved
- There is also a Opus header gain value stored. ?!
- Foobar has a dedicated screen, "Manipulate Opus header gain" - Apply = Re-Encode? Just write a header? Or apply without re-encoding (as mp3directcut did). I guess the latter.
- That screen has "Lower adjustments according to peak levels" - But opus files hold no peak level metadata?! Or rather values it calculates on-the-fly?

Rocket science for mere mortals I think.

@The Chief  @yeyo or anybody else affected by the options dialog issue. I've uploaded a test version here. Click the download button. Please can you confirm that the options dialog always now opens correctly? I'm not able to reproduce the issue hence the test version, but then I don't have win11.

The features check is now done on the first use of the options dialog during a particular session, rather than during start-up as suggested by @regor . If it still isn't robust, then likely I'll remove the features checker & add a manual setting to panel properties for affected users, e.g. those using Wine.

The right-click menu fails to open options. I found that there is no problem on win10 system. It cannot be opened on win11, such as 22621.105 and 22621.160. I think it may not open on other win11.
Had the same problem on Win10. Problematic code is in panel.js module:

Quote
      if (soFeatures.gecko && soFeatures.clipboard) popUpBox.config(JSON.stringify([this.dialogGrps, this.dialogFiltGrps, this.defViewPatterns, this.defFilterPatterns]), JSON.stringify(ppt), cfgWindow, ok_callback);
      else {
         popUpBox.ok = false;
         $.trace('options dialog isn\'t available with current operating system. All settings in options are available in panel properties. Common settings are on the menu.');
      }

I've changed it to just:
Quote
      popUpBox.config(JSON.stringify([this.dialogGrps, this.dialogFiltGrps, this.defViewPatterns, this.defFilterPatterns]), JSON.stringify(ppt), cfgWindow, ok_callback);

It works now without any glitch.
I'll try your method, thank you!

Under Preferences -> Playback, the ReplayGain headline, Processing: did you have "apply gain and prevent clipping according to peak" selected? If you don't prevent clipping, then ... it could clip, and that doesn't sound well.
Haha thanks, I just found it out myself. Yes, that was the cause.

My settings were:
- Apply gain and prevent clipping according to peak
- Preamp with RG info: +20 dB

The point here and with OPUS is, it has no Replaygain Peak information, so "prevent clipping according to peak" does do nothing here and it fully preamps with +20, which sounds terrible. It would do that with other file formats as well if they have no peak info, I tried it.

Need to think about if I apply RG on encoding stage or use no RG at all in case of OPUS.

Opus doesn't store peaks as the specs of the format disallow it.
What kind of ReplayGain settings do you use? I purchased the track and tested this. The Opus encode has peaks over 2 dB above digital full scale, but track gain value -7.11 dB. So it would never be even near to clipping and volume pumping unless the loudness is seriously amplified.

Thanks, see above. Now what I've learned is the appearance of what you call "volume pumping" when seriously amplified :D Thx guys.

For the completeness, here's the audio in question: https://www.mediafire.com/file/6lxcos6rnhv69ff/RedSquare.zip/file

Case I read you purchased the track, good choice if you're into IDM etc.. Exm is awesome, he improved massively, he's my todays hero. RedSquare is ... ecstasy, I love this part from 03:30 to no end.

It's incredible, I see I'm member at HA since 2002, so that was when some of todays members weren't born.
