General Audio / Re: The difference between Windows and Linux
Last post by jsdyson -
Hi folks,
I've searched the forum but didn't find an edaquate answer to my question.

Is there someone who can tell me the difference between Linux and Windows when it comes to audio quality?
I don't know if it's just placebo effect or reality, but I do think that there is a (slightly, depends) better quality on Linux in combination with good hard- and software of course.

But I want to be sure, so guys, help me with your experience and (hopefully) explanations.

Sincerely,
Telepath
There is absolutely no difference between Linux & Windows in audio quality if you do all of the audio processing yourself.  If you depend upon the internal libarires, then as they say 'Your Miliage will Vary.'    For my DolbyA compatible decoder project, I use Linux for development, and compile the user's version for Windows on a Windows' box.

Talking about performance and responsiveness (not audio quality):
For low level, very aggressive development, Linux is a LOT faster for the developer, but for using pre-built libraries/GUI things/etc, then Windows tends to be better.  For extreme responsiveness under load -- Linux is pretty damned good.   I actually wrote the FreeBSD VM system many years ago, and because of the incredibly efficient allocation of memory resources, I could run Xwindows in 4MB (yes, MEGA, not GIGA.)  The 'unix' clones like Linux (and nowadays lesso FreeBSD) are amazing.   FreeBSD wins on low overhead for simple applications.  Windows is a big monstrosity that really needs to be pruned down to be most effiicent.
All in all -- the most important thing about performance isn't so much the OS, but the libraries, how the code is written, and the kinds of CPUs (and nowadays if you have an SSD.)

However, to answer the original question -- if all of the HW is the same, and you use EXACTLY the same code, and do all of hte processing software yourself -- Linux and Windows are the same quality.

Another easy work around is to change your playlist font to Segoe UI Symbol. I use CUI, but I'm pretty sure it can be done in DUI as well. And it likely wont work if you have rating stars in the titlebar either.

Audio Hardware / Re: About best earphones which are durable and with lowest radiation.

Can anyone of you compare the above two products and suggest which is the best. Many people in Amazon.in site who brought shq 1300 already reviewed that sound quality is not good, no bass etc.,.

I am attracted towards shq 1300 because I think it is latest and have new features than 1200 model.

Another issue is Philips company is not selling their products especially earphones on their own site. One of the person from Amazon.in has reviewed that "the wire of the product I received from Amazon.in is not the same as specified in Philips company website and so I think that Amazon people had taken the original wire and shipped the product with duplicate or fake wire."

Can anyone of you suggest where I mean from which website I can get original Philips product.

Hi I am going to buy Philips action fit shq 1200/10 earphones as these earphones are sweat proof, rain proof and also made with neo dynamic diaphragm.

I have also choosed Philips action fit shq 1300 but many people from Amazon.in suggested not to buy because it is inferior than shq 1200.

I think that the above two products are the best which are durable and affordable.

Any other suggestions please.

Thank you for the update.

Updated to latest version (foo_ui_columns-1.0.0-beta.1) and it works great. :)
I noticed that the Status Pane changed "Playing:" to "Playing"  (illustrating image included in this post).

Btw, Still holding my hope up for:
Ctrl+Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Tab to switch between tabs (standard windows behaviour)
to be implemented in a future update (but I am aware that the requests list is not a to-do list).

Anyone know any good icon packs for things like transport controls and the alphabet etc?
It would also be great to have some choice in icons for common functions like replaygain, BPM, properties, etc, etc.

Yes, with my current config I am using "letter" icons for my user defined buttons (Add, Clear, Preferences, RGain Scan, Search, Tag, and Visualisation), but it would be good to have more choice.

Hello Darkflame,
in your layout it looks like you have a pulldown menu for the foobar output device. I thought this is not possible (see e.g. here).
How did you do that?

As Case said, it's a new feature in the latest versions, very fabulous!
