[TOS #8] Re: USB transient noise with external DAC

Arnold, I can try the D1 and if it sucks, it gets sent back, or I can run it on optical which is likely to be quiet.  I probably could have kept the Schitt and ran it on optical, but got so frustrated with the darn USB noise that I wanted it out of my sight.  Like you say, the transients should not be so loud as to endanger equipment.  My B&K EX4420 has delay relays too.  I used to have a Dynaco 410, but it had a noisy fan.  There was too much point to point wiring in those designs.

I wonder if a USB powered unit like the D1 is going to work better because it would be simpler for it to delay audio at power on than something with it's own power supply like the Modi 2U.  I had an Audioquest Dragonfly 1.2 here for a week.  It did not have loud turn on transients.  It did have a volume control.  I sent it back because the sound was nearly instantly fatiguing.  It's possible the very low output impedance of it's headphone jack did not play well with the 33k input impedance of my amp.

As for how widespread the problem is, I can't say and the lack of complaints is odd.
