Title: Aune Audio and conversion of WavPack to FLAC
Post by: navin on 2020-09-25 12:51:35
Has anyone heard of Aune Audio?

https://www.auneaudio-europe.com/index.php/products/aune-x1s-pro-dac-es9038q2m-headphone-amplifier-32bit-768khz-dsd512-silver.html

I just got their X5s and X1Pro with the hopes of building a compact, PC-less media player, headphone based audio system.
I understand these players do not read WavPack files. Only FLAC.
Is there an easy way to convert all my WavPack files to FLAC?

You could use foobar2000 player to convert WavPack to FLAC.
Even if you use Linux, it works under Wine very well.

You could use foobar2000 player to convert WavPack to FLAC.

I did not know Foobar could do that. I was thinking of using FREAC

Almost any decent mediaplayer can do this as WAV and FLAC are open source.
Hence you can get the Codec for free.
MusicBee can do this as well.
If you like multi core power, look here: https://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

There are a couple of not-so-common audio formats that WavPack supports but FLAC does not: DSD and 32-bit floating-point.

But if you don't have any of those - and foobar2000 can easily tell you - then conversion is lossless and simple.

Many moons ago (about 15-16 years ago) I had the option of choosing between WavPack, Flac, and APE (Monkey's Audio) and for some inexplicable reason chose WavPack. There was a discussion on Hydrogen audio in 2004-5 about the pros and cons of the various formats.

At that time I never envisioned portable media players being able to play lossless except for ALAC on Apple's iPod. Now I was just trying to stick to the same lossless format I ripped everything else with 15 years ago. I guess now I will have to convert to FLAC if I want to be able to carry my file on a portable music player (like the Fiio X3 Pro) or play them on media players like the Aune X5s.

I like WavPack. Nothing wrong about it as long as you have something compatible for playback ... but most users won't need more than one lossless format, as you point out. (I have a few odd files, which give me an excuse to use WavPack as well as FLAC.)

If you are tight on disk space, then converting and then deleting could be an issue, but otherwise ...
I would actually take the days it needs for fb2k to bit-compare in the end. The reason is that I've had odd things happening - the official FLAC frontend is not safe (https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php?topic=99803.msg921798#msg921798).

So, using foobar2000, I'd do the following steps (lots of overnight tasks here):

Ironically, as a twisting ending, Wavpack or [insert  other obscure audio format here] will certainly be around in 10-15 years, and still playable on smart phones or what-have-you; whilst portable DAPs - save possibly for the odd high-end, premium, niche one - which seems to be already the de facto right now - will not!

There are smartphones capable of playing WavPack? I did not know this. Which models are?

If you are tight on disk space, then converting and then deleting could be an issue, but otherwise ..
So, using foobar2000, I'd do the following steps (lots of overnight tasks here):
  • foo_verifier, verify all files. (Re-encoding will produce "valid" files; if something is corrupted, I want to know, not to destroy evidence.
  • foobar2000 to convert to identical directory structure
  • foobar2000 with foo_bitcompare. (But first, check that you have the same number of files, same number of samples, etc.)
  • Delete old. Again, using foobar2000
  • Search old structure for WavPack files to make sure there are no-one left that weren't caught and indexed
  • If you didn't copy "other" files, now it is time to merge.

1. I cant find a portable player that can recognize WavPack.
2. I did not fully understand what you want me to do.
I do not have shortage of disk space. I have enough space to store a Wavpack version as well as a Flac version if need be.

I assume your idea is to
first verify the veracity of all the files using foo_verifier
then convert all wavpack files to flac using foobar

I dont know what to do with in foobar2000 with foo_bitcompare

And I did not understand how I could "search old structure for WavPack files to make sure there are no-one left that weren't caught and indexed" if the old files were deleted (as per previous instruction).

Foobar2000 app on android and iOS can play wavpack and also read replay gain tags.

Does this mean I can install FooBar on a portable media player that is Android based like the one below?
https://www.fiio.co.in/collections/music-players/products/fiio-m6-portable-lossless-music-player

From this list it looks like FooBar is not supported by the M6
