Need help with encoding to FLAC and MP3

I've tried to look for help on this, and frankly, I am lost. I want to backup my cds into FLAC to play on my computer and into 192K VBR MP3 for use on my mp3 player. I have been trying to use EAC, and can extract the MP3 tracks fine, but I am lost with the FLAC settings. I don't know where to start there, it would be nice if I could have both extracted at the same time, but if this isn't possible, I'm flexible.

Can anyone tell me the settings or programs to use? I have been able to figure out EAC w/LAME, but I don't know what settings to use for FLAC, and don't know how to encode both formats at once.

Any help will be appreciated.

Unless you're an expert (I'm not one either) the compression setting in the flac
command line on the above page should work AOK for archiving.

You are indeed able to automate EAC encode to multiple formats, though it requires a helper app to do this such as REACT or MAREO.

REACT: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=35158
MAREO: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=42050

I'm not familiar with either one but it's my understanding that there's a little bit of legwork to set them up to do as you describe.  HTH.

Lastly, there isn't a "192k VBR" setting for lame (you could however choose 192k ABR).  -V 2 --vbr-new (or -V 3) should yield files comparable in size to 192kbps.

Thanks for the reply, I looked at that guide and it seems pretty straightforward.

If there's anyone here who could help me configure MAREO or REACT, I would appreciate the help.

Also, I have been using the -V 2 --vbr-new settings for LAME, I just stated it wrong, I meant averaging around 192k. Thanks for the clarification, though.

EDIT: Actually, I've been assuming that FLAC is pretty much the best format to use for archiving and computer playback, but if there is one that would probably work better for these uses, feel free to recommend them to me. Thanks.

you can look at:

it seems flac and wavpack are the best choices at the moment (or ALAC for IPOD use) in regards to realistic encode/decode for the widest range of people.

flac is heavily supported and wavpack is catching up. i use both (wavpack more now, tho)
