Title: Google Play Music now supports gapless playback
Post by: skamp on 2012-11-13 17:20:56
I confirm that Google Play Music (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.music) (Android's default music player) is now indeed gapless (at least on my Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.1.1, with Ogg Vorbis files):

Quote
v4.4.811H
* Added ability to keep Thumbs Up, Last Added, and Free and Purchased playlists on device.
* Auto-generated Instant Mixes on Recent tab based on your favorite songs.
* Gapless playback support (on devices with Android 4.1 or later)
* Improvements for keeping music on your device for offline playback.

Edit: oh, and the associated online service is now available in the UK, Germany and France (https://plus.google.com/+GoogleTV/posts/7csbnGFAJFA).

Best news I've heard in ages! I've just installed it on my Samsung Galaxy S3 - it's brilliant!

Is that Vorbis files you loaded on the phone directly, or via the cloud?  Last I knew, the cloud uploads are all stored as mp3 regardless of what you submit.

That's still the case, see http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/a...;answer=1100462 (http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1100462)

So is the only way to get gapless playback out of google music to have Vorbis files on my phone straight from the computer (i.e. not downloading from the cloud) and play them from my phone? (and heck, if I have to do that, I'll just use another player  )

Said another way -- is there any way to get gapless playback over the cloud in google music? I've tried several experiments of uploading my music, and they all fail...if anybody has had success, please share the steps!

Thank you!

I wouldn't assume that.
