it makes perfect sense; in fact i believe this is how search in itunes behaves.  what he is looking for would be equivalent to pressing enter after every letter you type in database search.  you'd be watching a dynamic search results playlist get smaller and smaller as the search narrows.

I agree.  It makes sense and I would greatly appreciate it if this feature was implemented.

Even if its not added, this component is still the best.

Thanks

Sometimes, I don't remember the current setting of quicksearch and to see them I have to scroll through different context submenus, so:
why not transform the toolbar into a small panel where we could have always visible the "where" and "how" and "what" settings, maybe as radio buttons and, for tagz fields, checkboxes (one for aech tag and/or each preset)?

If you consider this out of the scope of the plugin just ignore this.

How about if the searchbox had some greyed-out text when it was out of focus and clear? It could just read something like "Match All in Database using Standard" etc (not sure if that should be the exact wording but you get the idea)

Version 1.4 is out for foobar 0.8.3 (same features as 2.6). Download from first post.

All I want is for the toolbar to search without us having to hit enter when in database mode.
But "Search as you type" in database mode makes no sense.

So basically you want iTunes-style dynamic database search....  That's like asking for your CPU to get jacked up, I'd imagine.

There's a way to get what you want.  Like I said...  Just stick all your music in playlist called Default or Library... Then serach there.

That's what I do now, find as I type in a full playlist, and send the results to another playlist.  The only problem is for a new search I have to reselect the full playlist.  If I were searching the database I could just type away.

yay finally found the inline option, it was almost as if when I was running 2.3 the option wasn't there but when I upgraded to latest I could see it... now I am one happy chappy

You CAN make a playlist called "library" or "default" that has every song in your library.  Dynamic search will work here.
Yes, of course you can.

But why does"search as you type" in database mode make no sense? We all know pressing a key will produce some cpu cycles depending on search and database size. But "no sense"? Please help me, I'm really blind here.

But then why don't you use the conventional way (db search = entering search string plus having to press enter)?

Does searching a library of several thousand tracks for those containing "a" make sense? hmmm ... not sure.

You could create a minimum search string length if you think it will be a problem. I'll say it again...I've been using the database search demo toolbar to do dynamic searching of the database and have experienced no problems in terms of performance.

Yay its finally been ported thx alot, but one problem. I cant add the toolbar into my foobar, it doesnt make any sense, it just doesnt show up in the selection.

I have mine added by using the columns ui layout.

It looks similar to follows

horizontal splitter
  |
  +--Buttons
  |
  +--Quicksearch panel

But also my quick search isnt located on the default button toolbar.  I noticed it doesnt show up when you try to add it there..

A possible solution would be to remove all of the toolbars and then put them back in place using the columns ui layout...

Hope that helps...

ye i tried that, yet it isnt available to choose from. It is defintely "installed" because i can see the quicksearch preferences., just not the plugin itself.

Just lazyness I guess!  And it's cool to see the playlist shrink as you complete the name of an artist or title with find as you type.

I have added a tooltip to the latest version, together with small other changes. Please redownload from first post.

..I think it's a bug. If there is already text in the box, and you press a key bound to 'Quicksearch Toolbar', the text in the box isn't highlighted until you start typing. The upshot of this is that many searches have their first letter truncated.

Can't reproduce here ... focus back to the toolbar should recall exactly the same cursor position and text selection/highlight.

Minor bug I've noticed: After a quicksearch is performed, the "Undo" function returns the playlist not to the state before the search, but to the state before that one, as if it doesn't count the quicksearch as a modification. Hope that makes sense. Not sure if there's an easy way around that, since it might be outside of your component's control, but I thought I'd let you know.

Thanks for the recent updates - I'm loving this component.

edit: Obviously, this is only an issue if using a static playlist for results rather than using the "Append search string..." option.

- playlist shrink while typing

This would be a great feature  . At the moment I use "MP3 Rat" to organize my music collection just because of this feature. I have 7K files and it doesn't cost any CPU power to search for an "a". I don't know about the speed of the foobar database, but I can't imagine this feature would make trouble. Though it would make the search much more comfortable. In most cases you would no longer need to enter a complete search string. Often a few letters are enough to see that there is only one or a few match(es) left. You know it from the standard search with F3. But it is much less flexible than your component. E.g. you can't use the standard search as a toolbar and it has no columns.

I also thought of something else. 2 modes. Mode 1: Searching the playlist. And mode 2: Searching Library, adding/removing tracks to a playlist as you type. This would be the ultimate track finder and best Library browser imo.

It's not just because it looks cool or because people are lazy, search-as-you-type really does improve usability. If you can see how narrowed down your search is while you type, often you don't need to type as long of a search string, or it will show you in real time that your search needs to be more specific.

I understand what he wants, I was rather surprised about the strange workaround.

I agree with alphaex32 and I do not fear this would be a computer newbie trap or support intensive ("why is searching that slow???!11!??"?"). Keep in mind: Any foobar user is kind of computer expert  and will understand if he has low cpu ressources and a huge database. OTOH there might be millions of people with lot of cpu power...

i really like where this plugin is going ... one feature i would like to have is quick change to the 'search in ...' setting (maybe by right-click on the icon) and also different icons for different 'search in ...' modes (so i would know just by looking what i have it set to)

Yup, the plugin needs an easier way to see in which mode we are.

You know about enter, ctrl+enter, shift+control+enter?

The only problem is, if you are in "playlist+find as you type" mode. If your typed string reaches a point, where there is no match in current playlist, the plugin marks the whole text. So you overwrite when you go on writing. And cannot use shift+control+enter for database search.

I have already added a tooltip that shows which mode you are, just move your mouse on the icon. Different icons is a good idea however.

If your typed string reaches a point, where there is no match in current playlist, the plugin marks the whole text. So you overwrite when you go on writing. And cannot use shift+control+enter for database search.

Will fix for the next version .... i'm thinking about implementing a wider "find as you type" (on database) capability, as it was requested by many.
