Help - Need recomendation for a good Linux compatible MP3/Flac Player

Hi,

I am getting a present for someone, a portable MP3 player, and I don't like ipods. I would like some help. Does anyone know of a good MP3 player that is linux ubuntu compatible? I would like it to be able to play MP3s but also if possible FLAC files. A bonus would be playing ape, wav or ogg files, but this is ot necessary since those formats can easily be converted to FLAC and MP3. I do not mind if it needs flashing to get it flac compatible. I would like something of high quality, it doesn't have to be cheap. I would like it to be easy for the person to be able to load newly downloaded MP3s or to delete unwanted ones. It definitely can not be DRM in anyway. I make my own MP3s at times or download them, and I want to be able to use MP3s from any source. Also I would like something with expandable memory cards like cameras have. All of these are preferred options, I would be thrilled with any suggestions so long as they are linux compatible.

In addition it would be nice if it was somewhat mainstream, available at tigerdirect, futureshop, bestbuy or staples. However I will order off the internet if thats the only option to get a really good linux compatible MP3 player.

So any suggestions on which one I should get?

This is a trusty player that has always done the trick for me.  Maybe a bit out dated now.  Does Flac, ogg, mp3 out of the box (I believe there is a 60 gig version).  Rockbox is better then the standard software and with that you can play any codec you want.  Works great with Linux, Windows or Mac or any OS that can read and write to a USB hard disk.

They have many names, and many shapes; for me the standard is the best compromise to a small portable player, with low consuming display, standard aaa battery, standard 1/8" earphone plug, acts like an usb disk with zero software needed. Oh, and they cost a sixth of a similar displayless apple product... Been using one since 2005.

No flac yet, the Swan Project aims that.

The Sansa fuze supports mp3, flac, vorbis and wma, file transfer is either done through MSC (UMS) or MTP and it supports µSD cards (up to 32 GB).

It probably is the cheapest player that matches your criteria, yet sound quality is excellent.

Are you sure it is flac and ogg compatible?
In the link you gave I can see only Audio: MP3, WMA, WAV, AA
In the rockbox page I can't find sandisk fuze as a compatible player
SanDisk: Sansa c200, e200 and e200R series (not the v2 models)
