How to compress 4k HD video to mp4 using hevc and h265 codec and fdk_aac.

Hi I am Rupesh from India and I have PC and a DVD drive. From others I have bought a DVD which consists of video but the quality is too high and so size also. I want to compress them to mp4.

I have brought three DVDs from my friend and these consists of upto 30 .vob files and the total files size is upto 32 GB.

I have opened the properties of one file and it is showing that video bitrate is 5500 kbps and audio bitrate is 320 kbps and video resolution is 2400 by 2000 etc.,.

Now I want to convert these vob files to mp4 using hevc and h265 video codec and fdk_aac audio codec.

I have tried to convert these vob files using handbrake and avidemux in both Windows and Linux operating systems.

To convert one file it is taking time upto two hours.

Someone suggested that we must have separate hardware hevc pci card to encode any video to mp4 but my PC is old I mean it has amd radeon 3000 HD graphics.

Can any one of you suggest how to convert these vob files to mp4 with 1024 by 768 resolution and at 1100 video bitrate and 96 kbps audio bitrate.

Regards,
Rupesh.

While there are people on here who can, no doubt, help you, you would be better to ask your question on the Doom9 forums:

https://forum.doom9.org/

which is dedicated to re-encoding of video, etc.

Encoding using the x265 encoder takes a lot of cpu power, so hours on an old cpu is perfectly normal.
Try the "very fast" preset in Handbrake. Or maybe an even faster setting.
Or if it is still not fast enough for you, then use h.264.

And be patient :)

Hello Rupesh!

Like Mark7 said, H265 is slow, painfully slow, even on modern hardware.
Based on your specifications, I would say forget about it. Use H264, it is much faster.
All these things can be done using ffmpeg but there is a problem. fdk-aac is not included in it so you will need to
compile your own version. There is a script that can help you compile it.

If you are familiar with ffmpeg and CLI in general, you can even encode audio separately using the better Apple AAC codec.
You mentioned that you want to use 1100 kbit/s bitrate. This means that you will need to use two pass encoding.
(Think of it as encoding the same video twice.)
Quality will be much better and size will be smaller.
Be careful about desired bitrate tho. Encoding a video with lots of still images
(for example Photoshop tutorials or something similar) or gameplay videos are extremely different.
There is no one-bitrate-for-everything.

A regular DVD has a resolution of 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL).     Of course, you can burn anything onto a blank DVD disc but since you have VOB files, I assume it's a standard video DVD.

Standard VOB files are MPEG-2 video.  The audio has to be LPCM or Dolby AC3 on NTSC discs and PAL also allows MPEG-2 audio.   It can have DTS audio, but it has to be in addition to one of the standard formats that all players have to support.

There are DVD ripping programs that will convert to almost any A/V format while combining the VOB files to make a continuous movie file.     Most of them are black market applications because most of them also crack the copy protection.

XMedia Recode can do almost any audio/video conversion but it won't crack copy protection.

I have not seen correctly the video resolution of the vob file but I have seen clearly that video bitrate is more than 5500 kbps.

While coming to audio properties the bitrate is 320 kbps and it has 5.1 channel audio.

I have seen all properties of the vob file in Windows explorer itself.

If you have multiple computers available to you, RipBot264 has a distributed encoding more that can make x265 encodes fly.

You said that you bought three DVDs. Do you need three separate MP4 files or do you need to combine all of them into single MP4 file?
For ripping the DVD, I would suggest the good old DVD Decrypter. After that you can use ffmpeg's concat function to join the files.
Keep in mind that some VOB files are used only for intro and menu background so you will not need them.
If your DVDs are standard DVDs like DVDdoug mentioned, there is no need to use H265. H264 is more than enough.
For audio, there is no way to have 5.1 audio with 96 kbit/s. Best you can do is stereo.
What would really help is to have more information about your files. Install MediaInfo if you can and send us the details.
