Title: ReallyRareWares has risen from the dead!!
Post by: john33 on 2017-09-04 14:07:23
For those who may be interested in old codecs, etc, - basically anything to do with digital audio, but old and mostly deprecated(!), Roberto has revived RRW. You will find a news item at RareWares and a link at the top of the page. ;)

Wow, talking about a blast from the past. Nice.

Does this mean that Roberto will also start posting at HA again? One can hope...

As one of the early HA users, it would be nice to see him again on this place.  ;)

In the past I always checked Rarewares for updates about programs. Took me a long time for teaching myself not to do that anymore but maybe now it gets new updates :)

Blast from the past.

I wonder if we ever see things like GeoCities come back. Maybe I should set up a tripod page for shits and giggles...

That's awesome, thanks.  I love how they have CoolEdit 16-bit Windows?!?!!  :D

I really adored CoolEdit 96 and CoolEdit 2000 and used one of them right up into the Windows Vista years.
The custom amplitude curves were my main declicking tool when viewing waveforms in spectral mode.

I like how the "about" page (http://www.rarewares.org/rrw/about.php) states the website looks good in any browser...

...any browser? I wonder...

In the attached pictures, you see RRW in Dillo for DOS and Arachne. Arachne was having serious trouble with one of the GIFs. The page doesn't look too bad in both of them (page is still usable) but maybe you wanna adjust it a little bit?

I didn't make a screenshot, but in links -g it looks like in Chrome and Firefox almost!

Well, I could have tested it on Mosaic. And HotJava. And BeOs NetPositive. And QNX Voyager. And Amaya.

I have all of these here. Because I'm a psycho. But honestly...  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sooooooo.... do you kids (really, I'm past 35 now!) have stuff to contribute to RRW? I'm eager to update it!

As I mentioned in the revival update. I'm looking to fill in the blanks with everything I missed these last 10 years. Versions of EAC, Foobar and LAME that have been released since then. That FhG MP3 surround thing. Whatever else you believe deserves being there!

Please keep the contributions coming!

So Roberto, now that we're talking about Pink Floyd anyway (let's see how far I can hijack this until a mod intervenes), did you see this exhibition yet?
http://pinkfloydexhibition.com/

I went to London last month and visited this. It was AWESOME. Best exhibition ever. A must-see for any Pink Floyd fan.

Maybe the exhibition will come to Brazil one day (do you still live there?)

Not sure if relevant enough, but I have a few versions of the winamp decoder for musepack/mpegplus, including versions from bushmann and klemm.

Also, I have at least version 37k of the Apollo player, including flac and vorbis plugins. (not sure if i might have any other version on backup CD's)

Not so sure about the Winamp plugins... wonder if anyone has any use for those

Screenshots!

This update includes something I have been meaning to add to RRW for years: screenshots!

Check the pages of your favorite graphical applications (I do not see much point in adding screenshots of command line applications), maybe there will be a screenshot there. I have not yet upoaded screenshots for all apps, but those will probably come in the next update.

Besides the screenshots, this is what has been added/updated:

Enjoy!

As someone whose early experiences of playing music files on a computer was the original Sonique, I enjoyed reading about the kerfuffle over the "rage-inducing" version 2, which happened after I'd found my own alternative. I always wondered what had happened to that player.

As a long-term lurker on HA (actually, since its early "post-r3mix.net" years and well before my creating this username) I've grown accustomed to your invaluable contributions to this community and can only concur with the stir your comeback has caused. They certainly helped me out considerably during the creation of now-defunct qualidademp3.com in our native Brazil, in the early noughties.

Welcome back, @rjamorim

Hello

Thank you for the offer, and sorry for not grabbing those files you provided in the past! I completely missed them.

I downloaded the fb2koldies package though, and will upload most of them. Other than those, I updated your spreadsheet with the versions missing from RRW, and put it here:
http://www.rarewares.org/rrw/fb2k.xls
(no point uploading all the countless beta versions, IMO)

Thank you very much! I'm planning to do the next update towards the end of October, so no hurries.

Oh, and something that got buried in this update, this made me laugh:

I installed most graphical tools in RRW to obtain screenshots, and decided to go ahead and test some of them.

I installed and ran the AudioZip (http://www.rarewares.org/rrw/audiozip.php) lossless encoder, and noticed "oh, that's interesting! It offers me to use a password when compressing a wav file"

So I went ahead and tried protecting my sample wav with "blahblah" as password. Sure enough, when I tried to decompress it, it wouldn't do so without entering the correct pw.

Nice feature! And I never saw it in any other lossless format.

But then I decided, in a hunch, to open the compressed file in an hex editor...

More screenshots and nice updates

I added screenshots to most (all?) graphical programs in ReallyRareWares. Some are bland, some are amazing, several are just horrid. Have fun perusing them!

Besides the screenshots, these are the novelties:

GitHub and new goodies

This is the first update where ReallyRareWares development and changes are being versioned at GitHub (https://github.com/rjamorim/rrw). This won't make much of a difference to visitors, but should help streamline site maintenance.

Of course, feel free to submit pull requests... ;-)

And these are the updates, this time around focused on players:

I'm interested in filling up the Apollo page with more versions. If you have them lying around, please get in touch! (check the About page)

Regards;

Roberto

rjamorim, rc55, 2017? I think I will go back to sleep, something seems very off.

How modern to use github. Soon you will use github pages, markdown and github LFS for the files...

LFS sounds interesting, but RW burns way more bandwidth than what they provide... (and I'm way too old to learn markdown now that I kinda grasped html)

I did some serious research these last few weeks, trying to obtain information as accurate as possible for the dates displayed for each file (that information will come handy for some site improvements I've been planning).

I researched release notes, readmes, zip file timestamps, and even PE timestamps; and hopefully the pages now portray as accurately as possible what was released when.

Also, I decided to upload/update several MP3 encoders this time around:

If you have LAME versions not featured at the LAME page, please submit them!

I don't know on which old HDD I have my collection of Apollo... I only found few of the latest versions.
Normally all my downloads preserve server times but not this time.

Hello Thundik81

Not to worry, the Apollo webpage is pretty comprehensive about release dates for each version:

Time to scour the old hard drive collection for any promising uploads.

Haha that makes me feel great! RRW is some 15-year-old html code that still works well, somehow. Now, if only Firefox and Edge would support height="x%" in my <img> tags...

Sorry, for those newer browsers, you'll have to use style tags. Either pre-defined, or inline style= definition on the img tag. Just note that if you use a percent definition, it will be relative to the space available to the object, not relative to the size of the image. So maybe make some use of server side processing or scripting tags to adjust relative sizes?

Hello kode54! Good to see you're still around =D

Yeah, I really didn't want to redo the website in CSS, part of its charm is keeping the same code and design from the early 2000s (besides, I don't really understand CSS)

I'll look into scripting tags, or maybe save the images resized at the server side... Thank you for the hints!
