Shorten file header structure

I'm looking for some documentation on the Shorten file format, specifically whatever header there is that specifies sample rate, number of channels, playtime, etc.  I've looked through the source for shorten and shntool, but I guess my C's a little rusty cause I didn't manage to get much past the "ajkg" magic string... Can someone point me to some other documentation, please?
