A Re-Encode or NOT ?

hey,

i've been listening to Norah Jones for some days now, one particular album
which i've d/l some ages ago. it came as ape/cue package.

and everytime when i listened to it i got abit cocky about some parts
which sounded crappy for an ape encoded cd.

today it sounded that cocky, like having mp3 artefacts on some places (highs/voices)
that i had to use aucdtect and the tool told me the following:

x:\>aucdtect -m0 cdimage.wav
auCDtect: CD records authenticity detector, version 0.8.2

------------------------------------------------------------
Processing file:        [CDImage.wav]
Data analysis:          [100%]
------------------------------------------------------------
This track looks like MPEG with probability 95%

this does mean it was an mp3 before, or not?

if so, i am very pissed off cos i already storaged it onto dvd..

on the other side, back then i hadn't had the audio hardware/equip i have now,
thus i couldn't hear it back then  ..

so what do you think?

Decode a piece of the APE to WAV and do a frequency analysis in Audacity. If you see a lowpass, you'll know what you have.

I don't consider the quality of illegal downloads something to get pissed off about.

Quality of legally bought CDs is another matter.
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.

i am pissed off because of the wasted dvd space not about the fact
that i had downloaded some crap

ok done that on 3 different songs of the album.

it looks like a lowpass, yeah. the last frequency is at about 16-18khz with a dB of -73 to -103 or so.

so that means i have a transcode of an mp3 album, right ?

Was there a log file included with the original files? Just curious.

Off Topic:

In the early days of Hydrogenaudio.org the answer to questions like these would be the suggestion simply to re-rip the files from your own original CD...

I think you should buy the original CD instead of downloading supposedly lossless CD images.
The name was Plex The Ripper, not Jack The Ripper

As various members have already stated, discussion regarding illegally gained material is frowned upon here.
